Element error results from adaptive analysis
Note:
Element error results are calculated only when you run an Adaptivity solution process.
Element error results are stored as a scalar error value for each element. This data is useful for determining the quality of the adaptive analysis based on the existing mesh. It can help you decide whether the existing mesh is acceptable, or whether it should be refined. The larger the error, the more refinement is necessary.
The element error calculation is a variation of the relative percentage element error derived from the Zienkiewicz-Zhu error estimate (1987). The Zienkiewicz-Zhu error estimator is a best guess, stress-based, 'a posteriori' type of calculation that has been widely implemented in evaluating results for adaptive solutions.
To arrive at a result set of element error values, a relative error percentage is first calculated for all elements in the model, using strain energy and displacement error norms. After averaging the relative error percentage for all elements in the model, any element with a value lower than the average is considered negligible in effect (zero on the contour plot). The relative error percentage for the remaining elements is defined as the element error. Areas of high stress gradient and high stress jumps are therefore clearly visible.
