Projecting elements
Use Element Copy and Project to project either 1D or 2D elements along a specified vector to a target surface. With Element Copy and Project, the software offsets the new elements from their original geometry by a percentage of the distance to the target surface. For example:
If you enter a % Offset to Surface value of 100, the software projects the new elements entirely onto the target surface.
If you enter a % Offset to Surface value of 50, the software projects the new elements to a location that is halfway between the original geometry and the target surface.
With Element Copy and Project, the software projects the nodes on the selected elements to valid points on the target surface. If the software can't find a valid projection point on the target for a given node, it does not project the element.
When you copy and project elements, the software copies both the associated displacement and nodal coordinate systems from the nodes on the source elements to the nodes on the newly created elements.
Using the Along Vector method
The Along Vector projection method lets you project elements along any selected vector to a target surface. With Along Vector, you can offset the new elements by a percentage of the distance to the target surface.
The following graphic shows an example of elements projected with the Along Vector method. In (A), we selected a group of 2D element faces and specified a vector and a target surface. (B) shows how the software projects those elements to the target surface. Notice how the software only projects elements that have valid projection points on the target surface.
Using the Element Normal method
The Element Normal projection method lets you project 2D element faces along each element's normal to a target surface. The following graphic shows an example of a group of 2D element faces (A) copied and projected onto a target surface along their normals (B).
