Cumulative damage

After the stress or strain amplitude and mean stress are determined for each cycle, the number of cycles to failure are determined using the selected life criterion (S-N curve). The damage of the cycle can then be calculated by:

where Di is the damage caused by the ith cycle and Nif is the number of cycles to failure for the ith cycle.

Applying the Palmgren-Miner rule, the total damage, DT, of an event can be calculated by summing up the damage caused by each cycle:

The number of times the strain history can be repeated until failure occurs, NE, is the inverse of the total damage:
