Meshing > Pyramid element transitions
Importing ANSYS models that contain pyramid elements
Pyramids and their associated tetrahedral elements imported into the same mesh collector
When you import a model into Pre/Post, the software typically creates separate mesh collectors for the different element types in the model. However, when you import a model that contains pyramid elements, the software creates two separate meshes within a single mesh collector—one mesh for the pyramid elements and one mesh for the associated tetrahedral elements.
If you delete the pyramid mesh, the software automatically deletes the associated tetrahedral mesh.
If you delete the tetrahedral mesh, the software automatically deletes the associated pyramid mesh.
Supported ANSYS elements for pyramid transitions
Pre/Post supports the following types of ANSYS elements:
SOLID95, SOLID186, SOLID70, AND SOLID90 pyramid elements.
SOLID92, SOLID95 (hexahedral form only), SOLID186, SOLID187, SOLID90 elements with missing midside nodes.
Parabolic hexahedral to linear tetrahedral transitions supported only for import
Although ANSYS lets you create transitional pyramid elements between a parabolic hexahedral and a linear tetrahedral mesh in a thermal analysis, this transition type is not supported in Pre/Post. However, you can import ANSYS models into Pre/Post that contain this type of transition. While you cannot modify the mesh in Pre/Post, you can solve the model.
