Exporting and importing fields
To share fields between models and users, or to create fields outside of Pre/Post for use in a simulation, you can export and import fields using text files.
When you export a field, the software writes a text file that contains formatted data that completely describes the field. The data typically includes the field name, independent and dependent domain variables, units, interpolation and extrapolation options, bounds, and the expressions or tabular data that define the functional relationship.
You can export a table field. The resulting text file contains tabular data.
You can export a formula field. The resulting text file contains expressions.
You can export a table of fields that is a collection of exportable fields such as table fields and formula fields. The resulting text file contains expressions and tabular data.
You can export a linked field when the source field for the linked field is exportable such as a table field or formula field.
You cannot export a reference field.
When you import a field from a text file, the text file must be formatted the same as the text file that the software writes when you export a field. For details regarding how to format the text file, see File format for importing fields.
Tip:
An easy way to obtain the formatting for the text file is to create a dummy table field, formula field, table of fields, or linked field with the same attributes as the field you want to import. Then, use the Export command to create a text file that you can use as a template for your field.
You can import a table field.
You can import a formula field.
You can import a table of fields when the source fields for the table of fields are existing fields in the part file or are defined in the text file before the table of fields.
You can import a linked field when the source field for the linked field is an existing field in the part file or is defined in the text file before the linked field.
You cannot import a reference field.
The import capability requires that the text file contain all the attributes and data for the field. An alternate approach (for table fields only), is to define the attributes of the field from within the Table Field dialog box, but import the tabular data for the field from a text file that contains comma, space, or tab-separated numerical values.
For more information on this method to import tabular data, see Defining tabular data.
When you import a field, a naming conflict arises when the field that you are importing has the same name as an existing field. When this occurs, you can specify how the software resolves the naming conflict. For information on your options to resolve naming conflicts, see Options for importing fields when naming conflicts exist.
