Ray Path Analysis scenario

The Ray Path Analysis (RAY) post-processing scenario lets you visualize ray paths and echograms. It is available for Simcenter 3D Ray Acoustics results in HDF5 file format.

Ray paths

The scenario lets you visualize ray paths at specified times or across a range of values. The following shows the ray paths displayed. The last ray is displayed in red with a larger line width

You can set the ray colors and widths for all rays including the highlighted ray using the Customer Defaults dialog box.

Selections for rays

You can choose to visualize the rays by:

  • Source, which lets you choose the source of the rays.

  • Microphone, which lets you choose the receiver of the rays.

  • Path Number, which lets you choose a path number or range of rays based on the start and end path numbers.Note: In Path Number (Rays), when you set the Filter to Manually select values to animate over, you can select the rays to be displayed.

Set defaults for rays

  1. From the File menu, choose UtilitiesCustomer DefaultsSimulationPre/PostPost ProcessorScenario-based Post Processing.

  2. In the Ray Model View Display group, set the defaults for ray color and width.

Step through each ray

To view one ray after another, at the bottom of the Scenario Based Data-Visualization navigator, click Displays the next iteration of the current Post Scenario or Displays the previous iteration of the current Post Scenario .

Parameters for rays

The following table lists the parameters available for defining the Ray Path Analysis post-processing scenario. They appear in the Parameters node of the Scenario Based Data-Visualization navigator.

Parameter Description
Show all rays Shows all rays of one selected source.

Echograms

The scenario also lets you visualize echograms. Echograms show on a timeline the different ray path attachments and their individual sound pressure contribution, which help you to understand the overall acoustics of an enclosure.. An example of an echogram is given by the blue lines on the figure below.

Echogram - XY plot of sound pressure over time

Selections for echogram

You can choose to visualize the echogram by:

  • Frequency, which lets you choose the frequency.

  • Source, which lets you choose the source of the echogram.

  • Microphone, which lets you choose the receiver of the echogram.

Synchronized Ray Paths and Echograms

The scenario lets you visualize ray paths and an echogram stacked in one view. The ray paths are displayed in the upper half of the view and the echogram in the lower half. Because the plots are synchronized, you can probe a value in the echogram and let the software display the associated ray path in the upper plot. The following figure below shows an example of synchronized plots, where the software displays an echogram and only the ray path of a probed value.

Synchronized plots of ray path and echogram

Selections for rays and echogram

When you choose:

  • Path Number (Rays), you visualize the ray paths by a path number or range of rays based on the start and end path numbers.Note: In Path Number (Rays), when you set the Filter to Manually select values to animate over, you can select the rays to be displayed.

  • Frequency (Echograms), you visualize the echogram by a frequency.

  • Source, you visualize the source of the rays in the ray plot and the pressure values caused by this source in the echogram.

  • Microphone, you visualize the microphone in the ray plot and the pressure values at that microphone in the echogram.
