Stress classification lines

Stress classification lines (SCL) are query curves that satisfy the following requirements:

  • They are straight.Curves or jagged lines are invalid.

  • They only pass through regions meshed with solid elements. For example, a query curve can pass successively through the upper flange, web, and lower flange of a wide-flange beam that is meshed with solid elements, but cannot pass successively though the upper flange, void, and lower flange.

Because SCLs are query curves, they are not restricted to beginning and ending at nodes. They can begin and end at other mesh-related features such as mesh points and element centroids, or geometry-related features such as endpoints of polygon edges and associative points.

Note:

You create associative points with the Point command.

When the software performs the numerical integrations that are required to calculate the membrane and bending stresses, it divides the SCL into 48 equal length segments. The software uses the elemental or element-nodal stress results and the shape functions to calculate the values for the stresses at the ends of each segment. With these values and the corresponding locations along the SCL, the software then uses a trapezoid rule algorithm to perform the numerical integrations.

You can create query curves:

  • Prior to selecting the Stress Linearization command from the display of the Simulation file or a post view.

  • From within the Stress Linearization dialog box.

In the Stress Linearization dialog box, all query curves are listed in the Query Curve (line) table, but only the query curves that are straight and free of voids are selectable.

For more information on query curves, see Query curves.
