Relative path support for external files

When you specify the name of an external file in Pre/Post, the software infers and stores the relative path to that file. For example, when you use existing temperature results to define a new Temperature constraint in the Multiphysics environment, the software uses the path to the results file that you specify to infer its relative path to the Simulation file. If the location of a specified file changes, such as the location of the temperature results file, the software uses the stored relative path information to try to locate the file.

For example, you can zip the directory that contains the Simulation file as well as any referenced external files, such as a temperature results file, and send the entire directory to a co-worker. As long as any referenced external files remain in the same location relative to the Simulation file, the software can automatically locate those files when you load the Simulation file on a different computer.

If the location of an external file changes, the software searches the following locations in order to find the file:

  • The absolute path that you specified for the file.

  • The relative path for the referenced file based on the last time you saved the Simulation file.

  • The current working directory for the Simulation file.

Icons indicate relative path support

The software uses icons to indicate when the software can infer the relative path for a specified external file:

The software automatically infers the relative path for the specified file. The software cannot infer the relative path for the specified file. The path to the specified file is not valid, or the file is required, and you have not yet specified a path to it.

Customer default for invalid file references

Use the Validate External File References on Part Load default to control whether the software validates any references to external files when you load a Simulation file. When you select this option, the software displays an information window when you load a file that lists:

  • The name of the object that references the external file, such as a Temperature constraint.

  • The status of the external file, including whether the file's location has moved or whether the file is invalid because it cannot be located.

  • The file's name and path.
