Create a specialist durability strain gage

  1. Make the Simulation file the work part and the displayed part.

  2. Choose Specialist Durability tab→Specialist Solution group→Strain Gage or in the Simulation Navigator, right-click the Strain Gages node→New Strain Gage.

  3. In the Strain Gage dialog box, from the Type list, select one of the following strain gage types to create: Uni-AxialSingle strain gage leg for measuring stress or strain in the direction that the strain gage is oriented.Bi-AxialTwo strain gage legs, arranged perpendicular to each other, for measuring principal stresses or strains in two directions.0–45–90 RosetteThree strain gage legs, arranged in 0, 45, and 90 degree angles, for determining principal stresses and strains.0–60–120 RosetteThree strain gage legs, arranged in 0, 60, and 120 degree angles, for determining principal stresses and strains.

  4. In the Name – Description group, in the name box, type a name for the strain gage, and optionally enter a description in the Description box.

  5. In the Placement group, select the method for placing the strain gage: on a Node or an Element Face Center.

  6. From the Location list, select either Top or Bottom to place the strain gage on the top or bottom face of the element.

  7. Click Node , Select Element Face , or Stacked Smart Selector Methods to select one or more nodes or elements on the model where you want to place the strain gages. When you select a location, a graphical symbol appears on the model that shows the orientation of the gage, including the local X-axis of the gage, the gage plane (the dashed triangle), and the normal direction to the gage plane. You can change this initial orientation in the next step.

  8. In the Orientation group, choose one of the following methods for determining how the strain gage is oriented: Face PlaneLets the software determine the plane for the strain gage automatically. For nodal locations, the software creates the plane normal in the Z direction at the node location. For elemental locations, the software places the plane at the average plane of the element face.CSYSLets you define the gage plane orientation using the standard coordinate system definition tools. For more information, see CSYS dialog box.

  9. (Optional) In the Rotation Angle box, enter an angle by which the strain gage will be rotated about the gage plane normal.Press Enter, to see a preview of the new orientation.

  10. Click OK.
