Video: Use selection methods with boundary conditions

When selecting polygon geometry or finite element entities while performing an operation, you can use the Method list on the Top Border bar to select related entities easily and more efficiently. When you select a method, the Type Filter list updates to show only types appropriate for that method.

(1) The Type Filter list on the Top Border bar, (2) the Method list on the scene toolbar and (3) the Smart Selector Options button on the scene toolbar

Note:

The Welcome role hides these options. To use these options, use the Advanced role or Essentials role.

For example, suppose you want to apply bearing loads to all cylindrical faces in a body. When prompted to select cylindrical faces, set Method to Cylinder Faces, and then select the polygon body. The software selects all cylindrical faces in the solid body.

You can use selection methods while performing the following tasks:

  • Using Show Only or Show Adjacent to control the display of entities

  • Creating meshes

  • Creating and editing nodes and elements manually

  • Creating groups

  • Creating node and element sets

  • Creating loads and constraints

The methods and type filters available at any time vary, depending on the operation you are performing and the specific context.

Tip:

When you are selecting entities while performing certain operations (such as creating a load), you can click Deselect All on the Top Border bar to deselect all selected entities and start again.

Smart Selector Options

Some selection methods use specified criteria to determine how and whether different polygonal geometry is related. For example, these criteria determine the maximum angle between two faces that are considered tangent, or the minimum and maximum radii that determine what is considered a fillet face. The default criteria values are sufficient for most applications; however, you may want to adjust these criteria, for example, when working with very small or very large parts. Click Smart Selector Options on the Top Border bar to control these criteria.

For example, suppose you want to select from a number of cylindrical faces in a part. By specifying the minimum and maximum angle for cylinder and fillet faces, you can more effectively filter the selection to select only the faces you want, as demonstrated in the following figure.

The minimum angle is set to 150, and the maximum angle is set to 360. The software selects the cylindrical holes as well as two partial cylindrical faces.
The minimum angle is set to 200, and the maximum angle is set to 360. The software selects only the cylindrical holes.
The minimum angle is set to 150, and the maximum angle is set to 200. The software selects only the two partial cylindrical faces.

Selection colors

When you select an object, it is highlighted using the default selection color. You can modify the colors used for selection on the Customer Defaults dialog box.

Tip:

Some commands use two colors to highlight selections: the Selection color (default is orange) and the Alternative Selection color (default is green). The green selection color may be difficult to see against the default green mesh color. To change the selection color:

  1. In the Customer Defaults dialog box, click GatewayVisualizationColor Settings.

  2. Double-click the Alternative Selection color, and click a different color.
