Modeling phase change

You can model changes in thermal properties of bodies due to phase change.

In thermal analyses, where the material melts, the liquid phase is considered static. The thermal solver does not model moving materials.

Temperature vs. supplied heat

  • (1) When the temperature is below the phase change temperature, the body increases its temperature according to its thermal capacitance.

  • (2) When the phase change temperature is reached, the body undergoes phase change until the latent heat of phase change is exhausted.

  • (3) After the latent heat of phase change is exhausted, the body continues to increase its temperature according to the specified specific heat above the phase change property.

To model phase change, you must define the following material properties:

  • Latent heat of phase change

  • Phase change temperature

  • Phase change temperature range

  • Specific heat above and below phase change temperatures
