FE Model Correlation and Update
Simcenter 3D FE Model Update
Simcenter 3D FE Model Update is an advanced correlation tool designed to update finite element models in order to match real life test data or another more complex analysis model as closely as possible. The Model Update solution process:
Correlates frequencies and mode shapes between a work solution and a reference solution.
Allows the definition of design variables.
Optimizes according to specified criteria.
Updates the finite element model of the work solution.
FE Model Update is an add-on to Simcenter 3D FE Model Correlation.
Engineers rely on previous experience and best practices for modeling components, physical properties, and materials of complex nature. Verification and validation procedures, which typically include finite element model correlation, help to confirm that the right assumptions are made and sound modeling methodologies are applied. After the engineers validate a model, the Model Update solution process helps to further improve the model by finding the best values for selected parameters, within specified ranges, to match the test results even more closely.
To create a Model Update solution process, you reference work solution results and reference solution results.
Work solution results are SOL 200 Model Update analysis results. These results represent the analysis model you would like to modify. SOL 200 Model Update is a Simcenter Nastran solution type designed to integrate with FE Model Update.
Reference solution results are the modal test data results or another set of analysis results. These results represent the target results you would like to match.
Note:
The analysis model of the work solution must be good enough to correctly capture the overall dynamic behavior of the structure using the normal mode results before applying the Model Update solution process. The Model Update solution process calibrates selected model parameters that are sensitive to the finite element model's stiffness and mass properties. These properties are sensitive to the normal mode results.

FE Model Update allows you to:
Create a SOL 200 Model Update analysis solution, a modal test data solution, and a Model Update solution process.
Create design variables which you predict are sensitive to the FE model stiffness/mass, and in effect are sensitive to the normal mode results. Example design variables are a physical property such as a shell element thickness, or a material property such as a modulus or density value.
Select frequencies and mode shapes to be included in the optimization target function, with any combination of weights.
Select the modal reduction method or physical (Guyan) model reduction method to obtain a reduced analysis model that can be solved rapidly using the embedded eigenvalue solver of the Model Update solution process. This allows you to account for design variable changes during the optimization process without having to resolve for the full model.
Graphically display sensitivities for each design variable with respect to each frequency or mode shape target.
Select one of the following optimization algorithms:Least squaresSteepest descentGenetic
Select shape correlation based on Modal Assurance Criteria (MAC) or cross-orthogonality (X-Ortho).
Export model update results to an Excel spreadsheet or a CSV file.
Update the initial values and bounds of the design variable modeling objects with the current optimized design variable values of the active Model Update solution process.
Update the material and physical properties referenced by the design variable modeling objects in the FEM and Simulation file with the current optimized design variable values of the active Model Update solution process.
