Laminate Composites > Inflating laminates
Create a butt joint
This example shows you how to create a butt joint between two plies that are on the same layer. The inflated laminate is created using the Extrude Laminate command. You can also inflate the 2D laminate using the Fill Laminate command instead of the Extrude Laminate command.
Choose Laminates tab→3D group→Global Layup .
Click Create New Ply twice.
The software creates two plies.
From the ply layup list, select both plies that you just created.
Define the same material and thickness for both plies.
From the Material list, select a listed material or click Select material to choose a material from the material library or create a new material.
In the Thickness box, type 3.
Press Enter to validate the thickness value.
From the ply layup list, select ply 1.
In the Description box, type 1_1.
Press Enter to validate the description value.
Click Define Draping Input.
From the Solver list, select Projection.
Select the elements that you want to drape with ply 1.
Click OK.
From the ply layup list, select ply 2.
In the Description box, type 1_2.The first integer in the Description box of the selected ply must be the same as the first integer in the Description box of the first ply you selected.
Press Enter to validate the description value.
Click Define Draping Input.
Select the elements that you want to drape with ply 2.
The draping region of ply 2 must touch the draping region of ply 1 but it must not overlap it.
Click OK to close all dialog boxes.
In the Simulation Navigator , right-click the Laminate Inflation node and choose Extrude Laminate.
Select all the elements.
(Optional) Select Flip Element Normals if you want to extrude above the mesh and the element normals point in the other direction.
Click OK.
The software extrudes the two plies in the same layer and creates the indicated butt joint.
