FE Model Correlation and Update > Correlation solution process

Correlation solution process

Correlation solution process can correlate:

  • Structural modal or operational shape results, such as acceleration, displacement, or velocity from a modal test and analysis (test-analysis) or from two sets of structural analyses (analysis-analysis).

  • Modal pressure results from an acoustic test and analysis (test-analysis) or from two sets of acoustic analyses (analysis-analysis).

  • FRF results from a modal test and structural analysis (test-analysis).

Analysis solutions

The analysis solution is a structural or acoustic solution containing mode and/or operational shapes, or a structural solution containing FRF result sets. For more information, see Analysis solution.

Test solutions

You import the test model and results from Universal files or from Simcenter Testlab files. For more information, see Test solution.

Understanding the two solutions in a correlation process

During a correlation process, the two solutions are called the reference solution and the work solution.

  • The reference solution is the solution which you do not want to modify but to which you want to compare the work solution. You can specify a structural or acoustic analysis solution or a test solution.

  • The work solution is the analysis solution that you are comparing to the reference solution. You can modify this solution (you can change, for example, the mesh, material properties, or constraints) and update the correlation process afterward.

Reference model with tracelines Work model with 2D shell elements

When performing correlation, the geometry of both the work and the reference models must be sufficiently similar so that the software can perform node matching. For example, one model can have 2D shell elements while the other can have trace or beam elements.

Requirements for performing analysis-analysis correlation

When performing analysis-analysis correlation, you can:

  • Use a structural or acoustic analysis solutions present in your Simulation file as your reference solution. For more information, see Analysis solution.

  • Import the results of your reference analysis solution into your Simulation file. For more information, see Importing analysis reference solution and Insert an analysis solution for correlation.

Note:

The FRF correlation solution process does not support analysis-analysis correlation.

Automatically loading mode shapes

The Automatically Load Mode Shapes customer default defines whether the reference and work mode shapes are loaded when you open a Simulation file that contains one or more modal correlation or model update solution processes.

Tip:

To find a customer default, choose File tab→UtilitiesCustomer Defaults, and click Find Default .

Not loading mode shapes speeds up the loading of a Simulation file when it contains many solutions processes, the work model is large, or when there are many modes in the solutions. When the mode shapes are not loaded, the status of the Modes nodes under the correlation nodes in the Simulation Navigator is set to Not Available. To load the reference and work mode shape for the active modal correlation solution process, use the Refresh Correlation command.
