Controlling the import of elements and nodes

You can do the following for the import of elements and nodes:

  • Control how implicitly defined ELSETs and NSETs are imported.

  • Set a customer default to control the import of implicitly defined ELSETs and NSETs.

  • Control the import of elements and nodes in included and appended files.

Controlling the import of implicitly defined ELSETs and NSETs

During import, you can control whether the software imports any implicitly defined Abaqus ELSETs or NSETs in your input files as Pre/Post groups. In Abaqus, an ELSET or NSET is either implicitly or explicitly defined.

  • You can implicitly define an ELSET or NSET by specifying that all elements or nodes of a specific type comprise that set. For example, the following syntax creates an ELSET named set1 that contains all the C3D4 type elements in the model:*ELEMENT, TYPE=C3D4, ELSET=set1, 1,  2

  • You can explicitly define ELSET or NSET by directly listing the elements or nodes that form that set. For example, the following syntax creates an ELSET named set2 that contains elements 6, 7, 8, 17, and 26:*ELSET, NAME=set2 6,7,8,17,26

If your input files contain implicitly defined ELSETs or NSETs, you can use the Import implicit ELSET/NSET as group check box in the Advanced Options group of the Import Simulation dialog box to control how the software imports those sets. If you select the check box, the software imports any implicitly defined ELSETs or NSETs in your input file. It uses those ELSETs and NSETs to create groups.

Clearing the Import implicit ELSET/NSET as group check box can improve the time it takes the software to import your input file.

Controlling the import of implicitly defined ELSETs and NSETs through a customer default

You can use the customer default, Import Implicit ELSET/NSET as Group check box in the Customer Default dialog box, to control whether the Import implicit ELSET/NSET as group check box is displayed and selected in the Import Simulation dialog box.

Setting the default is helpful because the Import implicit ELSET/NSET as group check box is in the Advanced Options group of the Import Simulation dialog box. The Advanced Options group is collapsed by default and not visible when you open the dialog box. In addition, without the customer default, the setting is lost when you start a new session.

Controlling the import of elements and nodes in include and appended files

You can use the following check boxes in the Import Simulation dialog box to control whether the software creates Pre/Post groups from the nodes and elements defined in an included or appended file being imported.

  • Create group from appended file

  • Create groups from include files

The group name is the name of the included or appended file without the file extension.
