Associating a polygon body to the CAD convergent-type sheet or solid body

In the Convergent Body from Body dialog box, the options you select from the Target Part list and the Associate to Convergent Body option control the relationship between the polygon sheet or solid body in the FEM file and the CAD convergent-type sheet or solid body. If you associate the polygon body to the CAD convergent-type body, when the CAD convergent-type body changes, the software updates the polygon body in the FEM file.

  • Whether a FEM file has an associated CAD part, the FEM file may still contain polygon bodies that were created with the Face from Mesh command or fluid bodies created with the Surface Wrap Recipe command.

  • The software does not automatically save new parts that you create in the Convergent Body from Body dialog box.

Relationships created with the New part file option

Select the New option to add the CAD convergent-type sheet or solid body to a new part file.

FEM file association Associate to Convergent Body option Result
The FEM file has no associated CAD part Off The software creates a new CAD part and adds the convergent-type sheet or solid body as an unparameterized feature.
The FEM file has no associated CAD part On The software creates a new CAD part and adds the convergent-type sheet or solid body as an unparameterized featureThe software associates the FEM to the new CAD part. The software associates the sheet or solid polygon body in the FEM file to the CAD convergent-type sheet or solid body.
The FEM file has an associated CAD part. N/AThis option is not available because the FEM file is already associated to a CAD part. The FEM file remains associated to the CAD part. There is no association between the polygon sheet or solid body in the FEM file and the CAD convergent-type sheet or solid body.
The FEM file is a component within an Assembly FEM file N/AThis option is not available because the Assembly FEM file cannot be associated with a CAD part The software creates a new CAD part and adds the convergent-type body as an unparameterized feature

Relationships created with the Existing part option

Select the Existing option to add the CAD convergent-type sheet or solid body to an existing part file that you specify. The part that you specify must use the same system of units as the FEM file.

Note:

If you convert a surface wrap polygon body created with the Surface Wrap Recipe command to a CAD convergent-type body, the software creates a CAD convergent-type body in the existing part file and a new polygon body in the FEM file. This new polygon body is separate from the surface wrap polygon body. The new polygon body is associated to the CAD convergent-type body and updates based on changes to the CAD convergent body.

The FEM file has no associated CAD part Off The software adds the convergent-type body as an unparameterized feature to the specified part.
The FEM file has no associated CAD part On The software adds the convergent-type body as an unparameterized feature to the specified part.Note: If the specified part file is read only, then the software only adds the convergent-type body feature for the current session. The software associates the FEM file to the CAD convergent-type sheet or solid body. The software may create additional associative polygon bodies based on the bodies contained in the specified CAD part and the options you specified in the New FEM dialog box when you first created the FEM file.
The FEM file has an associated CAD part. N/AThis option is not available because the FEM file is already associated to a CAD part. The software adds the convergent-type sheet or solid body as an unparameterized feature to the specified part.Note: If the specified part file is read only, then the software only adds the convergent-type body feature for the current session. The FEM file remains associated to the CAD part. There is no association between the polygon body in the FEM file and the CAD convergent-type body.
The FEM file is a component within an Assembly FEM fileThis scenario can occur when you have a FEM file that has no associated part, and you use the Surface Wrap Recipe command to create a surface wrap polygon body. N/AThis option is not available because the Assembly FEM file is not associated with a CAD part The software creates a new CAD part and adds the convergent-type body as an unparameterized feature

Relationships created with the Parent of FEM part file option

Select the Parent of FEM option to add the CAD convergent body to the part on which the FEM file was originally created. This could be a part file, a part file that is a component within a CAD assembly, or an idealized part.

Note:

If you select either All or All Visible from the Bodies to Use list in the New FEM dialog box when you create the FEM file, then the software creates a polygon sheet or solid body for each sheet or solid body in the CAD part. Consequently, when you create a CAD convergent-type body from a surface wrap polygon body and store it in the parent part file, the software creates a new polygon body in the FEM file. This duplication does not occur if you select the Selected option from the Bodies to Use list when you create the FEM file.

Relationships created with the Component of CAD Body option

Select the Component of CAD Body option to add the CAD convergent-type sheet or solid body as an unparameterized feature of the idealized part or the component of the associated CAD assembly.

Note:

The Component of CAD Body option is available only when the FEM file is associated with a CAD part. Additionally, you must have the idealized part or the component part loaded.
