Bolt Pre-Load dialog box (Abaqus)

Type Controls the type of bolt pre-load to create.Force on 1D ElementsApplies a concentrated load (force) to a bolt defined with a beam (1D) element. Adjustment on 1D ElementsApplies a tightening adjustment to change the length of the bolt.Force on 3D ElementsApplies a concentrated load (force) to a bolt modeled with solid (continuum) elements.
Destination Folder
Load Container Specifies the folder in the Simulation Navigator in which the boundary condition is stored. The list includes the root container and existing folders that you created using the New Folder command. Examples of a root container include Load Container, Constraint Container, and Simulation Object Container.
Folder Manager Displays a hierarchical list of existing folders. To create a new folder, right-click any level of the hierarchy and choose New Folder.
Model Objects
Group Reference Lets you apply the bolt pre-load to a group. Select the group from the list, or click New Group . For more information, see Group Reference options.
Select Object Lets you select the geometry or FE entities on which to apply the pre-load. ExcludedLets you remove individual entities from within the selected object.
Stacked Smart Selector Methods Opens the Smart Selector Methods dialog box where you can specify a progression of smart selection filters. For more information, see Smart Selector Methods dialog box.
Node/Pre-Tension Node
Select Object Lets you select a node to serve as a pre-tension node. Pre-tension nodes should not be attached to any elements in your model. For more information, see Defining a pre-tension node.
Pre-Tension Section
Region Appears when the type is set to Force on 3D elements.Lets you specify a Region that defines the surface inside the bolt that bisects the bolt. See Defining the pre-tension section for more information.
Magnitude
Force (Force on 1D elements type)Adjustment (Adjustment on 1D elements type) Specifies the magnitude of the force to apply to the bolt or the length adjustment for the bolt. You can use a field to define a force or tightening adjustment that varies with time for both 1D and 3D bolts. If you use a field, the software writes out a both *CLOAD and an *AMPLITUDE keyword when you export or solve the solution. For more information, see Additional magnitude options.
Direction
Section Normal For bolt pre-loads on 1D elements, determines the direction along which the software applies the load to the beam element that defines the bolt. For a pre-load on a 1D element, the default direction of the load is from node 1 to node 2 of the beam.Along Element applies the load from the first node to the last node in the beam element's connectivity.User Defined lets you specify a different vector to use as the normal. For bolt pre-loads on 3D elements, the software applies the pre-load along a vector that is normal to the pre-tension section. The Section Normal option lets you control how the software computes this vector.Average Surface Normal computes an average normal to the section that faces away from the underlying continuum elements.User Defined lets you specify a different vector to use as the normal.
Specify Vector Appears when Section Normal is set to User Defined.Defines the direction of the load. For more information, see Vector dialog box
Reverse Direction Reverses the direction of the vector.
