Create the design objective for topology optimization
The following procedure creates a design objective and adds it to an existing solution or subcase. To create a design objective without adding it to a solution or subcase, use the Modeling Objects command.
Each topology optimization solution should have only one design objective at either the solution or subcase level.
In the Simulation Navigator, under an active topology optimization solution or subcase, right-click the Design Objective node and choose New or Replace Design Objective.
In the Name box, type a unique name for the design objective or use the default name.
In the Label box, type a unique integer for the modeling object, or use the provided one.The dialog box automatically displays the next available modeling object number. However, you might want to change this if you use a particular series of numbers to identify certain types of modeling objects.
(Optional) In the Description box, type a description of the design objective. You can also click Description to open the Description dialog box. This lets you see more of the text that you type, as well as cut, copy, or paste text.
If you are creating a solution-level design objective, from the Definition Method list, select the approach to use for completing this dialog box:Standard—Limits the Response Type list to the most common responses.Any weight response is assumed to be in the Z-direction, indicating that there is no directional mass.Advanced—Displays a complete list of responses in the Response Type list and enables you to specify the direction of the mass when Response Type is set to Total Model Weight (WEIGHT).
In the Response Label box, type a unique design response identifier to write to the .f06 file when you solve the solution, or use the provided one. This label must begin with an alphabetic character.
From the Response Type list, select the response that you want to minimize or maximize. The options that appear in this list vary, depending on whether you are creating the design objective for a solution or subcase, and the subcase type. In addition, if you are creating a solution-level design objective and Definition Method is set to Standard, this list displays only the most common responses.Depending on the selected response, other options might appear on the dialog box. For example, if the design objective is to minimize displacement, you are prompted to specify the degrees of freedom and select the nodes. For more information on design objective options, see the following topics:Design Objective - Global dialog boxDesign Objective - Statics dialog boxDesign Objective - Normal Modes dialog boxDesign Objective - Direct Frequency dialog boxDesign Objective - Modal Frequency dialog boxDesign Objective - Buckling dialog boxNote: If you select elements in the graphics window, be sure to select only elements of the appropriate type. For example, if Element Dimension is set to 1D and Element Type is set to CBEAM, you can select any 1D element, even if it is not a CBEAM element. If you select elements that are not the appropriate type, Simcenter Nastran might use unintended responses from other elements for which the response item code is still valid.
If the Subcase Internal Combination Method list appears, select the option that indicates how to determine the response value to use for the subcase:AVG—Uses the average response value.MAX—Uses the maximum response value.MIN—Uses the minimum response value.SUM—Uses the sum of the response values.SSQ—Uses the sum of the squares of the response values.RSS—Uses the square root of the sum of the squares of the response values. For example, with a displacement response, you might select multiple nodes, and indicate that you want to use the average response for all the selected nodes.
If the Across Subcase Combination Method list appears, select the option that indicates how to determine the response value to use from multiple subcases. The options are the same as for Subcase Internal Combination Method.
From the Optimization Method list, select MIN to minimize the selected response, or MAX to maximize it.
Click OK.
