Two-Resistor thermal model

The Two-Resistor thermal model connects the electronic component to the PCB using the JEDEC two-resistor model. The solver:

  • Creates an internal lumped mass at the center of the electronic component that represents the junction.

  • Creates an internal thermal load and applies it to the lump mass.

  • Creates an internal null mesh between the component and the mounting region. The null mesh has the same geometry as the mounting region.

The software can report the temperature of every element on the component mesh, or a single merged temperature. According to the option you choose, the results are calculated as follows:

Variable component temperature

The solver:

  • Creates an internal thermal coupling that models the resistance, ΘJC, between the junction and the component region. You specify the resistance value.

  • Creates an internal thermal coupling that models the resistance, ΘJB, that you set between the junction and the mounting region. You specify the resistance value.

Single component temperature

The solver:

  • Creates an internal thermal coupling that models the resistance, ΘJC, between the case and the junction. You specify the resistance value.

  • Creates an internal thermal coupling that models the resistance, ΘJB, between the junction and the null mesh. You specify the resistance value.

  • Creates an internal merged thermal coupling that connects the null mesh and the mounting region.

  • Internally merges all the component elements to calculate a single temperature across the whole component region.
