Automatic stitching of NX Ship Design parts during FEM creation

Ship models contain numerous separate sheet bodies that intersect but that are not topologically connected. These separate bodies must be fully stitched prior to any CAE analysis. Capabilities in the Ship Structure Basic Design and Pre/Post applications facilitate the preparation of a model of a ship for finite element analysis. These capabilities include:

  • A CAE Preparation command in the Ship Structure Basic Design application.

  • Automatic stitching for ship models in the Pre/Post application.

CAE Preparation command in Ship Structure Basic Design

Use the CAE Preparation command to prepare ship basic design data for structural analysis in the Pre/Post application. This command creates special Ship Trim Body features that store data about edge pairs within the model.

Automatic stitching enhancements for ship models in Pre/Post

When you create a new FEM file on a part that contains Ship Trim Body features, Pre/Post uses the edge pairing information to eliminate as many free edges as possible. During this process, the software uses an edge-to-edge stitching technique to stitch appropriate free edges that belong to different bodies. You cannot control the automatic stitching process.

In most cases, this automatic stitching process eliminates many, but not all, free edges. After you create the FEM file, review the results of the automatic stitching. You can then use commands, such as Stitch Edge, to eliminate the remaining free edges in the model.
