Map draped fiber orientation to material orientation

Setting the material orientation is always required for analyzing ply stresses and strains from the element forces, and may be required for analyzing element forces. You perform the following steps in the FEM to map the material orientation.

  1. Specify which ply has the fiber orientation you want to map in one of the following ways:If either the first or last ply on a face has the fiber orientation you want to map, do the following:In the Simulation Navigator, expand the Material Orientation node.Right-click either the Default: First Ply node or the Default: Last Ply node and choose First Ply or Last Ply.If neither the first nor the last ply on a face has the fiber orientation you want to map, do the following:In the Simulation Navigator, right-click the Material Orientation node and choose New Orientation. In the Laminate Default Orientation dialog box, select faces or elements with the ply that has the orientation you want to map, and for which you want to define a material orientation. From the Select reference ply list, select the ply that has the orientation you want to map.Click OK.

  2. Verify that the Laminate physical property assigned to the mesh collector for the specified faces has been defined with Inherited from layup selected from the Stacking Recipe list.Note: Normally, you define Stacking Recipe as Inherited from layup when you calculate draped fiber orientation. If not, see Stacking recipe for more information.

  3. Set the material orientation of your model to Inherited from Layup by doing one of the following, depending on your solver environment:

  • Define Nastran 2D element material orientation.

  • Define Abaqus 2D element material orientation.

  • Define ANSYS 2D element material orientation.

  • Define LS-DYNA 2D element material orientation.

  • Define 2D element material orientation (Simcenter Samcef).
