Stitching edges

Use Stitch Edge to:

  • Join two separate edges into a single edge.

  • Stitch an edge into a face.

You can use Stitch Edge to stitch together free edges within a solid or sheet body or between different bodies. Whether you use Stitch Edge to connect free edges within the same solid or sheet body, or between different solid or sheet bodies, the software stitches the edges together and creates a single common edge.

Stitch Edge is particularly useful for eliminating free edges that can occur when you create a midsurface on a thin-walled part. You can also use Stitch Edge to repair small gaps or cracks between surfaces in your model.

Stitch Edge highlights free edges

When you select the Stitch Edge command, the software automatically highlights all free edges in your model. This makes it easy for you to identify edges that need to be stitched prior to meshing.

Different methods for stitching edges

The Type menu in the Stitch Edge dialog box controls how the free edges are stitched.

  • Select Automatic to have the software automatically stitch the geometry within the specified Search Distance. With the Automatic option, the option you select from the Geometry to Stitch list controls whether the software stitches free edges, free faces, or both free edges and free faces.Select Edge to Edge to automatically stitch free edges to other edges in the selected solid body.Select Edge to Face or Both to automatically stitch both free edges to edges and free faces to faces within the selected solid body.

  • Select Manual to manually stitch selected edges and faces.Select Edge to Edge to manually stitch a selected free edge to another edge.Select Edge to Face to manually stitch a selected free edge into a face. This allows you, for example, to model T-type junctions as well as to connect ribs into the appropriate faces. You can also use Manual Edge to Face to create a scar edge along a face.

Replay of automatic stitching operations after geometry updates

The Automatic method with the Stitch Edge command is supported for geometry replay. The software stores information about automatically stitched edges or faces in the CAE Geom Recipes node in the Simulation Navigator. In each recipe, the software stores the labels of the edges and/or faces that were stitched in that operation. If you use the Stitch Edge command to automatically stitch edges or faces in a FEM file, and the CAD geometry in either the master or the idealized part updates, the software uses the recipe to try to recreate the stitching operations with the updated polygon geometry.

1 – stitch thin ribs within housing
2 – stitch free edges in control arm

You can also use the CAE Geometry Recipes node to:

  • Rename the stitch recipes.

  • Display the locations of the automatically stitched edges or faces.

  • Delete selected automatic stitching recipes.

Highlighting stitched edges

You can highlight edges that have been stitched using the Display Stitched Edges option in the Model Display dialog box.

(1) stitched edge; (2) free edge

Unstitching edges

In some cases, you may need to later unstitch edges that you had previously stitched together with the Stitch Edge command. You can use the Unstitch Edge command to unstitch those edges. See Unstitching edges for more information.
