Laminate Composites > Material properties for laminate plies
Woven ply material
Weaves have warp (1) and weft (2) fibers. The nominal yarn angle (3) is the angle between warp and weft fibers before shearing occurs. Yarn angle (4) may change after shearing. The nominal yarn angle is usually 90° as illustrated in the following graphic. However, the nominal yarn angle does not have to be 90°.
The software uses the improved woven model to calculate the equivalent ply anisotropic properties when:
The nominal yarn angle is not 90°.
A woven fabric is draped over a doubly-curved surface causing the warp and weft yarns to shear relative to each other and the material to behave anisotropically with respect to the warp direction.
The plies that exhibit non-orthogonal yarn angle can be defined using Simcenter 3D orthotropic materials as well as Laminate Composites woven ply materials. You can then specify the nominal yarn angle in the Laminate Ply Material dialog box under the Improved Woven Model group.
With the improved woven model, Laminate Composites does the following:
Computes the equivalent anisotropic material properties for plies with non-orthogonal yarn angle.
Applies the computed anisotropic elastic constants, thermal expansion coefficients, and thermal conductivities to the Simcenter Nastran, Simcenter Samcef, and Simcenter 3D Multiphysics FEM.
Considers the shear in the failure metric computation.
With the improved woven model, you can simulate the as-manufactured mechanical properties of weaves that exhibit shear to assess stiffness, stability, thermal conductivity and strength.
