Dynamic response analysis workflow (Simcenter Samcef)

This workflow provides an overview of how to create a dynamic response analysis—either Linear Transient Response Analysis or Linear Harmonic Response Analysis.

Step Summary Detailed help topic
1. Build the finite element (FE) model and Simulation file. In Pre/Post, define the geometry, material properties, and meshes as you would for other structural solutions. Create new FEM and Simulation filesMaterial types for linear static or basic dynamic analysis—isotropic, orthotropic, and anisotropicMeshing
2. Create the Simcenter Samcef solution. In the Solution dialog box:Set the Analysis Type to Structural or Axisymmetric and Other 2D Structural.Set the Solution Type to Linear Transient Response Analysis or Linear Harmonic Response Analysis.Note: The subcase is created automatically. Only one subcase is allowed in the Linear Transient Response Analysis or Linear Harmonic Response Analysis solution. 3. Create boundary conditions for your model. Create loads, constraints, and simulation objects. For dynamic response analyses, you typically include the loads in load sets to attach the loads to an excitation law. Simcenter Samcef boundary conditions
4. Create load sets and excitation sets to apply the loads to your model. Use a table field to define the excitation law. 5. Select the solution method. Do one of the following:To solve an approximation of your model by setting the number of modes you want to compute, select the Modal Superposition (.DGE IRDY) check box.To solve the full model, clear the Modal Superposition (.DGE IRDY).For a Linear Harmonic Response Analysis with Modal Superposition enabled, you can also select whether to use residuals. 6. Define a damping strategy. You can define the following types of damping:Proportional damping for groups of elements.Proportional damping for the entire model.Superposed structural and modal damping. Damping (Simcenter Samcef)Superpose damping in a dynamic response analysis
7. Configure the time or frequency discretizations. Ensure that you create enough time or frequency discretizations (time steps) to adequately capture the excitations you set in the excitation set. 8. Create output requests. You can define the following types of output requests:Structural dynamicNodal time history (Linear Transient Response Output Requests Nodal 9xx or Linear Harmonic Response Output Requests Nodal 9xx)Element time history (Dynamic Output Requests Element 9xx)If you are using modal superposition, you can also request that the modal results files be created so that you can view them in post processing. Time history graphs: nodal results (Simcenter Samcef linear transient)Time history graphs: nodal results (Simcenter Samcef linear harmonic)Time history graphs: element results (Simcenter Samcef linear transient or linear harmonic)
9. (Optional) Chain the dynamic response analysis with a nonlinear analysis. Chain a dynamic response analysis with a nonlinear analysis to compute vibration around an instantaneous configuration. 10. Post-process the results. In the Post Processing Navigator, load the results. To view time history or frequency history output, choose Results tab→Tools group→Create Graph .To view additional modal results that you request by selecting the Generate Result Files for Modal Analysis check box in the Solution dialog box, right-click Imported Results in the Post Processing Navigator and import the *dy.des file.
