Parent/child behavior in load case filtering calculations
The behavior of parent/child relationships depends on the application. This topic outlines the behavior of parent child relationships when you create an individual calculation.
Parent/child relationships in individual calculations
The following table shows the parent/child relationships that the software uses when you create an individual calculation and use the Load Extraction dialog box to extract results from elements.
| Result type(1) | Selected entities | Entities from which the result set for the calculation is obtained |
|---|---|---|
| Elemental | Entire model | All of the elements in the model |
| Nodes | All of the elements whose connectivity includes one or more of the selected nodes | |
| Elements | All of the selected elements | |
| Edges | All of the elements that have an element edge that lies on one or more of the selected polygon edges | |
| Faces | All of the elements that have an element face that lies in one or more of the selected polygon faces | |
| Bodies | All of the elements that lie within the selected polygon bodies | |
| NodalElement-nodal | Entire model | All of the nodes in the model |
| Nodes | All of the selected nodes | |
| Elements | All of the nodes that are included in the connectivity of the selected elements | |
| Edges | All of the nodes that lie on the selected polygon edges | |
| Faces | All of the nodes that lie on the selected polygon faces | |
| Bodies | All of the nodes that lie within and on the surface of the selected polygon bodies | |
| (1) Use the Result Type list in the Load Extraction dialog box to specify the result type. |
Using groups to create individual calculations
The following table shows the parent/child relationships that the software uses when you create an individual calculation from a group.
| Result type(1) | Contents of selected group | Entities from which the result set for the calculation is obtained |
|---|---|---|
| Elemental | Nodes | All of the elements whose connectivity includes one or more of the nodes explicitly included in the selected group |
| Elements | All of the elements explicitly included in the selected group | |
| Meshes | None | |
| Edges | All of the elements that have an element edge that lies on one or more of the polygon edges explicitly included in the selected group | |
| Faces | All of the elements that have an element face that lies in one or more of the polygon faces explicitly included in the selected group | |
| Bodies | All of the elements that lie within the polygon bodies explicitly included in the selected group | |
| NodalElement-nodal | Nodes | All of the nodes explicitly included in the selected group |
| Elements | All of the nodes that are included in the connectivity of the elements explicitly included in the selected group | |
| Meshes | None | |
| Edges | All of the nodes that lie on the polygon edges explicitly included in the selected group | |
| Faces | All of the nodes that lie on the polygon faces explicitly included in the selected group | |
| Bodies | All of the nodes that lie within and on the surface of the polygon bodies explicitly included in the selected group | |
| (1) Use the Result Type list in the Load Extraction dialog box to specify the result type. |
When you select a group that contains a number of different entity types, the result set for the calculation is the union of the results sets for each entity type.
