Model a tracer fluid

This procedure assumes that you are aware of all the steps required to define a complete analysis. The steps presented here are additional steps required to model a tracer fluid.

Create Tracer Fluid modeling objects

  1. Choose Home tab→Properties group→Modeling Objects or choose MenuInsertModeling Objects.

  2. In the Modeling Objects Manager dialog box, from the Type list, select Tracer Fluid.

  3. Click Create.

  4. In the Molecular Diffusion Coefficient box, type the molecular diffusion coefficient of the tracer fluid.

  5. In the Turbulent Schmidt Number box, type the turbulent Schmidt number of the tracer fluid.

  6. Click OK.

  7. (Optional) Create any additional tracer fluids you require repeating the steps from 1 to 6.

  8. Click Close.

Specify initial conditions for tracer fluids

You must create an Initial Tracer Fluid — 3D Flow condition for each tracer fluid you model.

  1. Choose Home tab→Loads and Conditions group→Initial Conditions .

  2. From the Type list, select Initial Tracer Fluid — 3D Flow.

  3. Select the bodies, faces, or elements on which to apply the initial mass fraction of the tracer fluid.

  4. Select a Tracer Fluid modeling object from the list or click Create Modeling Object to define a Tracer Fluid modeling object.

  5. In the Tracer Fluid Mass Fraction box, type the corresponding mass fraction for the tracer fluid you are modeling.

  6. Click OK.

Define tracer fluids in an inlet boundary condition

See Create a Flow Boundary Condition for other options you need to set in the Flow Boundary Condition dialog box.

  1. Choose Home tab→Loads and Conditions group→Flow Boundary Condition .

  2. In the External Conditions group, click Create Modeling Object to define an External Conditions modeling object. In the External Conditions dialog box, you can set the ambient values or define temperature, humidity, and turbulence numbers. You must use an External Conditions modeling object whenever you use a Tracer Fluid modeling object in a flow boundary condition.

  3. In the Tracer Fluid group, select Specify Fractions from the Tracer Fluid list.

  4. Click Tracer Fluid List .

  5. In the Modeling Objects Manager dialog box, in the Selection group, select a tracer fluid from the list.

  6. Click Add to List.If you want to include multiple tracer fluids, repeat steps 5 and 6.

  7. Click Close.

  8. In the Tracer Fluid Mass Fractions box, enter the corresponding mass fraction of the tracer fluid you added in step 6 and press Enter. If you included more than one tracer fluid in the Modeling Objects Manager list, enter a mass fraction value for each tracer fluid you included.

  9. Click OK.

Modify solution options to model tracer fluids

  1. In the Simulation Navigator, right-click the Solution node and choose Edit.

  2. Click the Initial Conditions tab. From the Initial Conditions list, select Uniform. In the Humidity, Tracer Fluids, and Mixtures group, from the Tracer Fluid list, select Specify Fractions. Click Tracer Fluid List .In the Modeling Objects Manager dialog box, in the Selection group, select a tracer fluid from the list.Click Add to List.If you want to include multiple tracer fluids, repeat steps 2d and 2e.Click Close. In the Tracer Fluid Mass Fractions box, enter the corresponding mass fraction of the tracer fluid you added in step 2e and press Enter. If you included more than one tracer fluid in the Modeling Objects Manager list, enter a mass fraction value for each tracer fluid you included.

  3. Click the Ambient Conditions tab.In the Humidity, Tracer Fluids, and Mixtures group, from the Tracer Fluid list, select Specify Fractions. Click Tracer Fluid List .In the Modeling Objects Manager dialog box, in the Selection group, select a tracer fluid from the list.Click Add to List.If you want to include multiple tracer fluids, repeat steps 3c and 3d.Click Close. In the Tracer Fluid Mass Fractions box, enter the corresponding mass fraction of the tracer fluid you added in step 3d and press Enter. If you included more than one tracer fluid in the Modeling Objects Manager list, enter a mass fraction value for each tracer fluid you included.

  4. Click the Result Options tab.

  5. Select the Humidity, Tracer Fluids, and Mixtures check box.

  6. Click OK.

Solve and view tracer fluid results

  1. Choose Home tab→Solution group→Solve .

  2. In the Simulation Navigator, double-click the Results node.

  3. In the Post Processing Navigator, double-click the Tracer Fluid 1 — Element-Nodal node.In the Post Processing Navigator the tracer fluids are displayed on independent result sets with the name of the Tracer Fluid modeling object.
