Creating LS-DYNA materials in Pre/Post

You can create different LS-DYNA materials in Pre/Post and then have the software write them out as *MAT_ keywords when you export your solution.

  • You use the Manage Materials command to define a supported LS-DYNA material in the Pre/Post material library.Note: In the materials dialog boxes, you can use the Property View filter to display only the relevant material properties for specific LS-DYNA materials. For example, in the Isotropic Material dialog box, you can select **LS-DYNA MAT_PLASTIC_KINEMATIC (MAT_003) from the Property View list to view the supported properties for the *MAT_PLASTIC_KINEMATIC keyword.

  • You use the appropriate physical property table dialog box to:Select the Pre/Post material to use.Specify the *MAT_ keyword that you want the software to use to write out the data for that material during the export process.Optionally specify additional properties for certain material types.

Using Manage Materials to define an LS-DYNA material

Pre/Post currently offers generic material definition support for all solvers, including LS-DYNA. When you use the Manage Materials command to create a new material, you can use filters to view only the properties necessary to define a specific material. For example, in the Isotropic Material dialog box, you can select **LS-DYNA MAT_PLASTIC_KINEMATIC (MAT_003) from the Property View list to see the supported properties for the *MAT_PLASTIC_KINEMATIC keyword.

Importantly, Pre/Post does not assign the LS-DYNA material keyword to the material that you create. You must use the options in the Material Option group in the appropriate physical property table dialog box to map the material that you define in Pre/Post to an LS-DYNA *MAT_ keyword.

Assigning a Pre/Post material to a physical property table

To assign a material from the Pre/Post library to the physical property table, select the Use Pre/Post Material check box in the Material Option group. Then, use the Pre/Post Material list to specify the name of the material to use.

Using the Material Type list to specify the material keyword to export

You use the Material Type list to control how the software exports the property data from the material that you select from the Pre/Post Material list. During the export process, the software uses the data from the selected material to define the variables for the LS-DYNA material keyword. If any material data is missing, the software sets the corresponding variable to blank, zero, or to the default value.

  • Select Defined by Pre/Post to have the software determine the material keyword to export as shown in the following table. These Pre/Post material types...Correspond to these LS-DYNA keywordsNotesIsotropic*MAT_ELASTIC (*MAT_001)*MAT_PIECEWISE_LINEAR_PLASTICITY (*MAT_024)*MAT_MODIFIED_PIECEWISE_LINEAR_PLASTICITY (MAT_123)The software uses the options that are specified in the material that you select from the Pre/Post Material list to determine which keyword to export.OrthotropicMAT_ORTHOTROPIC_ELASTIC (MAT_002)AnisotropicMAT_ANISOTROPIC_ELASTIC (MAT_002_ANIS)Compound IsotropicMAT_ELASTIC (*MAT_001)*MAT_PIECEWISE_LINEAR_PLASTICITY (*MAT_024)*MAT_MODIFIED_PIECEWISE_LINEAR_PLASTICITY (MAT_123)The software uses the options that are specified in the material that you select from the Pre/Post Material list to determine which keyword to export.Low Density FoamMAT_LOW_DENSITY_FOAM (MAT_057)FabricMAT_FABRIC (*MAT_034)For example, if you select an isotropic material with no stress-strain curve from the Pre/Post Material list, then the software writes out the material with the *MAT_ELASTIC keyword.Note: If a material property is temperature-dependent, the software only exports the property of the first temperature in the table.

  • Select the specific LS-DYNA material keyword to export, such as *MAT_PIECEWISE_LINEAR_PLASTICITY. Then, use the Additional Properties option to specify or create the corresponding modeling object to define the additional material properties, including properties that the Pre/Post material library does not currently support.

Specifying additional material properties

For some material types, you can create an Additional Properties modeling object to specify additional material options that are not supported in the Pre/Post material library. For example, for a **MAT_RIGID (MAT_020) material, you can create a *MAT_RIGID Additional Properties modeling object to specify options for coupling with the Simcenter Madymo product.
