Non-Newtonian Fluid

Use a Non-Newtonian Fluid type modeling object to include a non-Newtonian fluid in your model. A non-Newtonian fluid is a fluid in which the viscosity changes with the applied strain rate.

A Non-Newtonian Fluid type modeling object allows you to modify the definition of an existing fluid material to include non-Newtonian properties. When you use the modified fluid material in your model, the solver interprets it as having the specified non-Newtonian properties.

Types of Non-Newtonian Fluids

The Type option in the Non-Newtonian Fluid dialog box lets you create the following types of non-Newtonian fluids:

  • The Power Law type models fluids with dilatant, pseudo-plastic, and similar behaviors. You can model with power law fluids such as suspensions of sand or pulp.

  • The Herschel-Bulkley type models fluids with Bingham plastic, viscoplastic, and similar behaviors. You can model with Herschel-Bulkley fluids such as mud, blood, paints, or oils.

  • The Carreau type is a generalized model that behaves as Newtonian at low shear rate and non-Newtonian for high shear rates.
