Advanced post processing of laminate results

Use the Advanced Post Report command to quickly identify critical element and ply data over many solutions. The enveloping, filtering, and sorting tools help you to find the critical element and ply data that you want without reviewing all the solver ply data.

Within the current Simulation file, the Advanced Post Report command lets you select one or more loadcases within all solutions with supported results, including solutions with imported results. The imported results need to be generated by the model in the active FEM using the same mesh and laminate properties, unless you use Quick Report.

The command supports results sets from Simcenter Nastran, Simcenter Samcef, ANSYS, or Abaqus, and computes:

  • Ply stresses and strains

  • Ply and bond failure indices

  • Ply and bond margins of safety

  • Ply and bond strength ratios

Caution:

If you select Stress or Strain Output Request, PCOMP from the Output Format list, and, MEM, BEND, SMEAR, or SMCORE from the Laminate Options list in the Solver Properties group in the Laminate Modeler dialog box, the calculated ply stresses and strains may be incorrect due to the approximations imposed by these options.

After you select the result sets, a laminate post report node is created in the Simulation Navigator. From the laminate post report node, you can create the spreadsheet report, the graphical report, or the quick report.

Quick Report 1

Spreadsheet and graphical post reports use the laminate properties in your active FEM. This allows you to switch failure theories or even modify your laminates after the solution was solved to perform what-if analyses without resolving the solution. The software updates draping and zones if required, prior to accessing results.

The quick post report queries the results without accessing the FEM.

Strength analysis calculation

The strength analysis results are failure index, strength ratio, and margin of safety results. Post reporting computes ply and bond strength analysis results.

  • Ply failure indices are computed if you select a ply failure theory and if you define all allowable ply material stresses or strains.

  • Bond failure indices are computed if you select an interlaminar failure theory and if you define the allowable laminate or material stresses.

Margins of safety and strength ratios are calculated from the failure indices.

You can control the format that Laminate Composites uses to write the margin of safety results to spreadsheets or to display the results using the Margin of Safety customer default.

  • Percentage (%) expresses the margin of safety as a percentage.

  • Scalar expresses the margin of safety as a scalar value.

When you change the option of the Margin of Safety customer default, and after you restart the software, you need to regenerate the result file for graphical reports or re-export results for the spreadsheet and quick reports.

Standalone OP2 file reader

You can change how Laminate Composites reads Simcenter Nastran OP2 files for laminate post processing using the OP2 File Reading Strategy customer default. For the Simcenter 3D post-processing (VKI) to read the OP2 file, select the Classic (VKI) option. The Advanced (OP2 Reader) option:

  • Sets the stand-alone Simcenter Nastran OP2 file reader to read the ply stresses and strains from the OP2 files.

  • Converts stresses from the OP2 file units to the Simulation file units.

  • Processes both 32-bit and 64-bit OP2 files.

  • Supports the following solutions:SOL 101 Linear StaticsSOL 401 Multi-Step NonlinearSOL 402 Multi-Step Nonlinear Kinematics

Multithreading

To improve the performance of Advanced Post Report, you can enable multithreading by populating the Number of Execution Threads for Multithreading customer default. Multithreading, which uses shared-memory parallelization, is enabled when the number of execution threads is greater than one.
