3D tetrahedral meshing

Video: Seed a 3D mesh with 2D elements

Use 3D Tetrahedral Mesh to create a mesh of three-dimensional solid elements on a selected body. You can use 3D Tetrahedral Mesh to generate a mesh of linear or parabolic tetrahedral elements. You can create a 3D mesh on solid bodies for all supported solvers.

Selecting the surface meshing method

Before the software generates a 3D tetrahedral mesh, it first generates a 2D mesh on all faces of a selected body if a 2D mesh does not already exist. The software then uses the nodes and element faces of the 2D mesh to create the 3D elements through the volume. You can use the Surface Meshing Method option in the 3D Tetrahedral Mesh dialog box to specify the method that the software uses to create the 2D mesh.

  • Select the Standard option when you want more control over how the software generates the mesh. In general, the Standard method works best when:You are working with a model where the underlying CAD geometry was defined in Modeling. You are generating a 3D mesh on a model that already has existing meshes.Your model contains mesh points and different types of Mesh Controls. The Standard method supports mesh points and all Mesh Control types for defining local element sizes. Your model is small or medium sized (roughly 20,000 or fewer faces).

  • Select the Mesh from Facets option when you want to give the software more control over the mesh generation process. In general, the Mesh from Facets method works best when:You are working with a model that contains faceted or convergent geometry that may be too complex to mesh with other commands.Your model does not contain mesh points or different types of Mesh Controls. The Mesh from Facets method does not support mesh points and supports only the Size on Face, Size on Edge, and Bounding Volume types of mesh controls.

For more information, see Creating a 2D mesh on faceted or convergent geometry.
