Define convection constraints (Abaqus)

  1. Choose Home tab→Loads and Conditions group→Convection .

  2. In the Convection dialog box, select the type of convection constraint to create. Free — Define either a surface film condition (if you select element faces or edges, or polygon faces or edges) or a concentrated film condition (if you select nodes or points).Free Convection on 2D Element Faces — Define a surface film condition on 2D element faces.Free Convection on Regions — Define a surface film condition on a surface region.

  3. Depending on the type of convection you selected, select the objects to which to apply the convection constraint. It you selected Free or Free Convection on 2D Element Faces, in the Model Objects group, click Select Object and select the geometry or FE entity to which to apply the convection constraint. If you selected Free Convection on Regions, in the Surface group, select the surface or surface regions, or click Create Region to create new surface regions.

  4. In the Properties group, define the sink temperature, Θ0, and film coefficient, h, in one of these ways:Select Expression to use a constant value or expression to define the magnitude. For more information, see Expressions. Select Field to define a convection constraint magnitude that varies spatially. From the Specify Field list, choose a method to create the field. For more information, see Using fields and expressions to define boundary conditions.

  5. If you selected to create a Free Convection on 2D Element Faces type of convection constraint, from the Film Type list, select the direction in which the film condition is applied to the 2D elements: FPOS — Apply the condition in the elements’ positive normal direction.FNEG — Apply the condition in the elements’ negative normal direction.

  6. Click OK.
