Thermal and Thermal-Structural analysis

You can perform a thermal analysis and use the results as pre-load input for a structural solve.

Supported environments

Pre/Post supports the following thermal analyses:

  • Nastran – SOL 153 Steady State Nonlinear Heat Transfer and SOL 159 Transient Nonlinear Heat Transfer

  • Simcenter 3D Thermal/Flow – Thermal and Advanced Thermal

  • ANSYS – Thermal

  • Abaqus – Heat Transfer

  • Simcenter Samcef – Heat Transfer

Thermal-Structural analysis

A thermal-structural analysis uses thermal results as pre-load input for a structural analysis. The solver:

  • Reads the nodal temperature data from the first output file.

  • Applies the temperatures to the nodes of the structure.

  • Uses the structural material properties, together with any existing structural loads.

The second set of results produces the structural deformation and stresses that result from the combination of thermal and structural loads.

Multiphysics thermal-structural analysis

With the Simcenter 3D Multiphysics solver environment, you can perform a coupled thermal-structural analysis. This analysis type links a structural solution from the Simcenter Nastran SOL 401 Multi-Step Nonlinear solver and a thermal solution from the Simcenter 3D Thermal solver. The results from the thermal solution affect the structural solution and the results from the structural solution affect the thermal solution. The same mesh is used for both the structural and thermal solution.
