Contact Formulation dialog box (Abaqus)

The Contact Formulation dialog box corresponds to the Abaqus *CONTACT FORMULATION keyword.

Modeling Object
Name Sets the name of the modeling object.
Label Sets a unique integer for the modeling object. This label also appears in the Modeling Objects Manager dialog box, and you can filter the objects listed in that dialog box by their label.
Master-Slave Assignments
Master and Slave Roles Overrides the default master-slave roles by specifying master-slave roles or by selecting to use a balanced master-slave contact.
First Surface Behavior Appears when the Master and Slave Roles check box is selected. The options correspond to the *CONTACT FORMULATION, TYPE=PURE MASTER-SLAVE parameter. SlaveSpecifies the first surface as the slave surface.MasterSpecifies the first surface as the master surface.BalancedSpecifies a balanced master-slave contact. Note: If you create a self-contact surface inclusion and assign master-slaves roles, the solver supports only the balanced approach. You cannot specify pure master-slave assignments for self-contact.
Smoothness Formulation Upon Sliding
Smoothness of Contact Redistribution Controls the smoothness of nodal contact force redistribution upon sliding.
Smoothness Type Appears when the Smoothness of Contact Redistribution check box is selected. The options correspond to the *CONTACT FORMULATION, ELEMENT ORDER SMOOTHING, LINEAR SMOOTHING, or QUADRATIC SMOOTHINGElement OrderResults in the smoothness of the nodal force redistribution being the same order as the elements underlying the slave surface, that is, near redistribution smoothness for linear elements and quadratic redistribution smoothness for second-order elements.LinearProvides better resolution of contact stresses near edges of active contact regions and can result in better convergence behavior.QuadradicImproves the convergence behavior and resolution of contact stresses within regions of varying contact stresses.
