Boundary layer meshing

Video: Create a boundary layer mesh

You can create boundary layer meshes directly in the FEM. Use the boundary layer meshing for CFD analysis and acoustics modeling.

Workflow for creating a boundary layer mesh

  • Define a boundary layer mesh control on the polygon face from which to start the boundary layers. Specify the following:The number of element layers and the thickness of the first layer of elements in the boundary layer mesh. The method used to define the height of the boundary layer. Specify either the total thickness of the boundary layer or the growth rate of the element thickness in the boundary layer. For example, a growth rate of 1.1 results in every successive layer being 10% thicker than the previous one. Mesh Controls Boundary Layer Boundary Layer(1)

  • Optionally create a 2D mesh on the polygon face that has the boundary layer mesh control. The boundary layer mesh contains wedge elements for triangular surface meshes and hexahedral elements for quadrilateral surface meshes. If you do not create a 2D mesh, the software automatically generates a triangular mesh on the surface.

  • Create a 3D mesh on your polygon body using either the 3D Tetrahedral or 3D Hybrid Mesh command. 3D Collectors Solid(1) 3d_mesh(1) 3d_Pyramid_transition(1) 3d_BL_HexWedges(1)

Resulting solid meshes

The number of solid meshes created depends on the complexity of your model and other mesh controls and meshes defined prior to creating the boundary layer mesh. The software creates up to five solid meshes. In the Simulation Navigator, these meshes are stored in the following nodes:

  • 3d_BL_HexWedges contains hexahedral elements and wedge elements.

  • 3d_BL_Tets contains tetrahedral elements.

  • 3d_BL_Pyramids contains pyramid elements.

  • 3d_Pyramid_transition contains pyramidal elements, to transition from hexahedral elements or quadrilateral shell elements to the tetrahedral elements.

  • 3d_mesh contains tetrahedral elements that mesh the rest of the polygon body volume. The software always creates the 3D tetrahedral mesh.

All these nodes except the 3d_mesh represent the boundary layer mesh.

Caution:

Do not rename the mesh collectors that have “BL” in their name. If you do, the software will be unable to update the boundary layer meshes correctly.

Note:

Use the Boundary Layer View in the Simulation Navigator to display polygon bodies with boundary layer meshes, and associated mesh controls and element collectors.
