Laminate Composites > Creating a global layup

Right-click commands for global layup nodes

Different commands are available depending on which node you right-click in the Simulation Navigator.

Layups node commands

The following commands appear when you right-click the Layups node in the Simulation Navigator.

Icon Command name Description
Update Updates plies that have their draping options modified.
Delete All Deletes all layups and related data.
Relabel Ply IDs Relabels the global ply IDs for all global plies in the model.
Butt joint Options Opens the Butt joint Options dialog box that lets you specify when the software creates butt joints between adjacent inflated plies.
New Layup Opens the Layup Modeler dialog box to let you create a new layup. See Creating a global layup and Creating global plies for more information.
Information Generates an Information window that displays the information on all global layups.
Auto-create Layup FE Groups Creates one group per layup. Each group contains the 2D elements, 2D element faces, and polygon faces in one layup and has the name of that layup.
Auto-create Ply Material FE Groups Creates one group per assigned material. Each group contains the 2D elements, 2D element faces, and polygon faces whose ply point to the material and has the name of that material.

Layup Offset nodes commands

The following commands appear when you right-click the Layup Offset node in the Simulation Navigator.

Icon Command name Description
Create User Defined Layup Offset Rule Opens the Laminate Layup Offset dialog box to let you define a layup offset distance for selected objects.

The following commands appear when you right-click the Top (#), Middle (#), Bottom (#), or User defined # (#) nodes in the Simulation Navigator. The number in the parenthesis indicates how many objects are selected. The number after User defined indicates how many user defined layup offsets you created.

Icon Command name Description
Edit Modifies the selected objects for the layup offsets and the bottom fiber distance for the user defined offset.
Clear Deselects the selected objects. The number in parenthesis is set to 0.
Delete Available only for user defined offsets.Deletes the user defined layup offset.
Set As Default Sets the selected layup offset as the default.

Material Orientation nodes commands

The following commands appear when you right-click the Material Orientation node in the Simulation Navigator.

Icon Command name Description
New Orientation Opens the Laminate Material Orientation dialog box to let you create a user defined material orientation. See Fiber orientation for more information.

The following commands appear when you right-click the Default: Last Ply or Default: First Ply node in the Simulation Navigator.

Icon Command name Description
First Ply Sets the material orientation to be the fiber orientation of either the first ply in the layup or the last ply in the layup.
Last Ply

The following commands appear when you right-click the Orientation # node in the Simulation Navigator. The number after Orientation indicates how many user defined material orientations you created.

Icon Command name Description
Edit Modifies the selected objects and reference ply of the user defined material orientation.
Delete Deletes the user defined material orientation.

Individual layup node commands

The following commands appear when you right-click one or more individual layup nodes in the Simulation Navigator.

Icon Command name Description
Update Updates plies that have their draping options modified. The red update icon in front of the node indicates that the layup contains plies that are out-of-date and need to be updated.
Force Update Forces the update of all the plies in the layups even those which are not marked out-of-date. This option can be useful, for example, if you change the element material orientation vector definition and want to make sure that all the plies are updated appropriately.
Reimport Layup Reimport the layup and its plies.
Export Plies to FiberSim Exports the global plies to FiberSIM using the HDF5 format. The exported file has the .h5 extension.
Edit Opens the Layup Modeler dialog box to let you edit the layup.
Edit Lock Angle Opens the Lock Angle dialog box to let you modify the value of the lock angle for all the plies in the layup. The lock angle is:The maximum amount of slippage that the fibers can withstand for a ply that is draped using the unidirectional solver. The maximum allowable shear angle for a ply that is draped using the woven solver. Buckling and bridging may occur beyond the maximum allowable shear angle.
Copy Copies the selected global layup with all plies and draping data.
Rename Renames the selected global layup.
Delete Deletes the selected global layups.
Relabel Ply IDs Relabels the global ply IDs for all global plies of selected layups.
View Red Fibers Displays the draped fibers that shear beyond the lock angle for all plies of the selected global layup.
View Flat Patterns Opens the Flat Patterns dialog box that displays the flat pattern of a global ply and lets you export the flat patterns as curves in Modeling.
Display Fiber Orientation Options Opens the Fiber Orientation Options dialog box to control the color display of the ply fiber orientation.
List Draping Results Opens the List Draping Results dialog box to let you export draping information for all plies in the layup to a spreadsheet application or a comma separated values (CSV) file.
Information Generates an Information window that displays the information on the selected global layup.
Auto-create Layup FE Group Creates one group per selected layup. The group contains the 2D elements, 2D element faces, and polygon faces referenced by all the plies in the selected layups. The group has the same name as the layup.
Auto-create Ply FE Groups Creates one group for each ply in the selected layups. Each group contains the 2D elements, 2D element faces, and polygon faces that are assigned to the corresponding ply. The name of the group has the name of the layup followed by the name of the ply.
Auto-create Ply Material FE Groups Creates one group per assigned material. Each group contains the 2D elements, 2D element faces, and polygon faces whose ply point to the material and has the name of that material.

Individual ply node commands

The following commands appear when you right-click one or more individual ply nodes in the Simulation Navigator.

Icon Command name Description
Update Updates the selected plies. It forces an update even if the draping options are not modified.
Edit Ply Import Options Opens the Edit Ply Import Options dialog box that lets you modify the import options.
Reimport Ply Reimports only the selected ply.
Edit Opens the Draping Data dialog box if you have selected one ply node or the Multiple Ply Draping Data dialog box if you have selected multiple ply nodes under one global layup. It lets you edit the draping options including the lock angle.
Edit Ply Thickness Tolerance Opens the Ply Thickness Tolerance dialog box to let you override the ply thickness tolerance that you defined for the layup.
Delete Deletes the selected global plies.
View Fiber Orientations Displays the ply fiber angles for the selected plies.
View Flat Pattern Opens the Flat Patterns dialog box that displays the ply’s flat pattern and lets you export it as curves in Modeling.
List Draping Results Opens the List Draping Results dialog box to let you export draping information for the selected ply to a spreadsheet application or a comma separated values (CSV) file.
Information Generates an Information window that displays the information on the selected global ply.
Auto-create Ply FE Group Creates one group per selected ply. The group contains the 2D elements, 2D element faces, and polygon faces in the selected plies, and has the name of the layup followed by the name of the ply.
