Creating global plies

A global ply is a special type of ply created for a global layup. Working in the Layup Modeler dialog box, you can create as many plies as needed for your global layup, specifying their details one by one or in a group.

Global ply rules

Because they are designated for use in a global layup, global plies have certain characteristics:

  • A global ply can exist in only one layup.

  • The software assigns a unique index number to the ply when you create it. You can modify this index number.

  • A global ply cannot be draped on two surfaces that do not share an edge. This reflects manufacturing processes. For example, a ply draped on two different molds, or on non-contiguous parts of the same mold, would in fact and by industry convention be two separate plies.

Details for global ply definition

You can use options in the Layup Modeler dialog box to define the following properties for a global ply:

Material

You must always define a material for the ply. Valid materials are:

  • Any isotropic or orthotropic material selected or defined in the Materials dialog box.

  • Any ply material defined in the Ply Material dialog box.

Thickness

You must always define a thickness for the ply, unless you define a value for Finished Thickness as part of a Ply Material definition.

Angle

You can specify the ply offset angle in the Angle box. This value defines how the selected plies are oriented with respect to the Primary Alignment defined on the Draping Data dialog box.

Color

You can specify the color of the ply as it appears in the View laminate for zone dialog box.
