Getting started > Migrating existing NX data to latest version
General guidelines and caveats
If the file fails to open
Generally, you can open a pre-NX 4 Scenario file without opening the master part. However, in certain cases, (typically involving models where the scenario modifies the master part dimensions), the file fails to open unless the master part is opened first. If you encounter errors opening pre-NX 4 Scenario files with a message similar to the following:
Error occurred - Internal error
try opening the master part before opening the scenario.
Migrated data prior to saving
Before you save migrated scenario or motion data, it exists only in memory. The only exception to this is for combination motion/simulation models. In this case, the software creates a copy of the original combination file, and then modifies it during the migration process.
Saving migrated data
As soon as the migration is complete, you are prompted to save all the new files created in the migration. If you click Yes, all of the parts created during the migration are saved. If you click No, then it is up to you to remember to save all the files.
What happens when you manually save migrated data depends on which application you're running, and which file is the work part when you perform the save.
In a Simulation application:
If the Simulation file is the work part, the Simulation, FEM, and idealized part are saved.
If the FEM is the work part, the FEM and idealized part are saved.
If the idealized part is the work part, only the idealized part is saved.
If the Motion application is running, the motion part is saved.
When you migrate a combination part:
In Motion, only the combo_m.sim file is saved.
In the Simulation application: If the combo_s.sim file is the work part, the Simulation, FEM, and idealized part are saved. If the combo_f.fem file is the work part, the FEM and idealized part are saved. If the combo_i.prt file is the work part, only the idealized part saved.
Alternatively, select File → Save All at any time to save all data associated with the migrated part.
Closing migrated data without saving
If you close migrated data without saving, the data in memory is lost and the backup file, if created, is deleted. For a combination motion/simulation file, the disk copy is deleted as well.
Every time you open pre-NX 4 simulation data in the latest version of NX, the software creates a backup file called original-file_backup.sim (NX 3) or original-file_backup.prt (NX 2 or earlier). If for any reason you close a simulation data file without saving it, you can access the original data via this backup file.
