Topology optimization post-processing results

When you solve a topology optimization solution, Simcenter Nastran performs multiple design cycles to determine the optimum design that achieves the objective while satisfying the specified constraints. By default, the solver performs 20 cycles, although you can increase that by modifying the solution. Some models might need up to 50 cycles, depending on such factors as the number and nonlinearity of the constraints. Increasing the number of design cycles produces a more highly refined design recommendation, but also increases the amount of time necessary to complete the processing.

When you create or edit the solution, you can specify which design cycles to include in the results (such as only the first and last cycle, every fifth cycle, or every cycle that shows improvement over the previous one). The results always include the first design cycle (Design Cycle 0), which reflects no optimization. This enables you to examine results such as displacement and stress before any optimization changes were made, as well as the comparable results for any given design cycle, after the optimization process is complete.
