Adjacent shells thickness correction (Simcenter Samcef)
In the Mesh Associated Data dialog box for cohesive elements, you can use the Adjacent Shells Thickness Correction options to solve a problem that can occur when a cohesive element lies between two shell elements that have significant thickness values compared to the thickness of the cohesive element.
Problem
When you use a cohesive element to model the interface between two thick shell elements, the distance between the cohesive midsurface (1) and the midsurface (2) of each shell can induce additional displacements due to the rotations of the shell and the moments (3) induced by the half thickness lever.
First solution: define shell offsets
The classic approach to correct this numerical problem is to add offsets (1) to the surrounding shells so that their midsurfaces (2) move onto the top and bottom surfaces of the cohesive element (3).
Second solution: use the Adjacent Shells Thickness Correction options
Another way to solve the problem is to add the Adjacent Shells Thickness Correction values in the Mesh Associated Data dialog box. When you specify the cohesive offset values, the software creates artificial rigid links (3) between the surface of the cohesive element (1) and the midsurfaces of the adjacent shell elements (2). These rigid links force the surrounding shells to comply with the Kirchoff assumption.
