Durability

Simcenter 3D Durability

Simcenter 3D Durability is an add-on to Pre/Post that you can use to validate the structural integrity of your structural model over its entire life cycle under various simple or complex loading conditions.

Fatigue safety factor results for a transient event

Durability event-based analysis process

To perform a durability event-based analysis, prepare the model as you would for a finite element analysis. Specify the durability material properties and then solve for stress or strain results.

The Durability solution process contains one or more events. An event can be static, transient, or random.

  • A static event determines the durability results of your structural model with respect to a static solution on which loading patterns are superimposed.

  • A transient event determines the durability results of your structural model with respect to transient loading.

  • A random event determines the fatigue life results of your structural model subjected to random excitations.

Each event is comprised of the following:

  • A stress analysis solution

  • Static, transient, or random loads

  • Durability event solver settings

Durability is assessed and displayed as contour plots of the following results:

  • Strength Safety Factor and Margin of Safety result sets assess structural strength of the model.

  • Fatigue Safety Factor and Fatigue Failure Index result sets assess fatigue safety factors of the model.

  • Fatigue Life and Fatigue Damage result sets assess fatigue life of the model.

Durability function-based analysis process

In a durability function-based analysis, the software calculates damage due to different loading cycles from multiple stress or strain histories. All stress or strain loading cycles in a duty cycle are identified using a cycle counting method.

The stress or strain history functions are independent from the structural model and they must be stored in AFU files.

You must specify the material to which the stress or strain functions are applied. The required durability properties must be defined for the selected material.

The following fatigue damage results are stored in either a spreadsheet or a CSV file:

  • The count range-mean matrix

  • The damage range-mean matrix

  • The percent total damage range-mean matrix

  • The total and out of range numbers of counted loading cycles

  • The total and out of range damage

  • The crack initiation estimate in number of events and in hours
