Connect a component to a PCB

This example shows how to define a PCB Component simulation object with a one-resistor thermal model.

  1. Choose Home tab→Loads and Conditions group→PCB Component .

  2. In the Name box, type a meaningful name for the component. It is a good practice to use the reference designator if available, because it is a unique PCB component identifier.

  3. In the Component Region group, click Select Object and select the most geometrically representative face of the component furthest from the board.

  4. From the Mounting Region list, select a predefined region or click on Create Region to create one.

  5. In the Component Model group, from the Model list, select One-Resistor.

  6. In the Model Parameters group, in the Theta CB box, type the case board resistance. For this example, type 4 C/W.

  7. In the Tmax Case box, type the maximum allowable temperature of the component case. For this example, type 80 ºC.

  8. In the Dissipation box, type the component load. For this example, type 1 W.

  9. (Optional) In the Description group, in the Part Number, Package, and Manufacturer boxes, type relevant component descriptions. PCB Exchange ECAD information is used to automatically populate these fields when the PCB Component simulation object is created by the Create ESC Solution command. This information is not used during the solve.

  10. (Optional) Clear the Compute Single Footprint/Case Temperature check box to obtain a temperature gradient on the component mesh.

  11. (Optional) To create an HTML report, in the Reports group, select the Temperature Report check box.

  12. (Optional) To track the temperature of the electronic component during the solve, in the Reports group, select the Track During Solve check box.

  13. Click OK.
