Convection Properties

Create a Convection Properties type modeling object to set up convection characteristics. Convection Properties determine the coefficient that controls convective heat transfer in 3D flow simulation. You can then apply these characteristics to the whole flow model, or to just a part of it.

  • To apply characteristics to the whole flow model, select the defined Convection Properties modeling object from the Default Convection Properties list on the 3D Flow page in the Solution dialog box.

  • To apply characteristics only to a part of the model, select the defined Convection Properties object in a Flow Surface or Flow Blockage dialog box. You can also create a new Convection Properties object from these dialog boxes.

Understanding the Automatic and Specify Bulk Value convection coefficients

In the Convection Properties dialog box, the Heat Transfer Coefficient option lets you specify how the software determines the coefficient that controls convective heat transfer. The equation for convection heat transfer is Q = h × A ×(Twall-Tfluid). The value for Twall is always determined by the thermal solver.

  • With the Automatic setting, Tfluid is the local fluid temperature determined by the coupled thermal and flow solver at the point where convection occurs. The local fluid temperature is the temperature of the fluid element contacting the wall surface element. You must also define the thermal turbulence wall function that the solver uses to compute the heat transfer coefficient. If you set Thermal Turbulence Wall Function to Automatic, the solver uses the forced convection correlation.

  • With the Specify Bulk Value setting, Tfluid is the Reference Temperature For Bulk Heat Transfer Coefficients specified on the 3D Flow page in the Solution dialog box. By default, the Reference Temperature For Bulk Heat Transfer Coefficients is set to Ambient.
