Thermal Loads dialog box (Thermal/Flow/SST/ESC/Multiphysics)

Option Description
Type Specifies how the thermal load is defined.Heat LoadDefines the heat flow rate (energy/time) or power into the selected geometry. You cannot mix solid bodies with other orders of geometry (2D, 1D, or 0D) in your selection.Heat FluxDefines the heat flux or heat load per unit area (energy / (time x area) ) of the selected geometry. Solid bodies are not supported for selection; however, you can select the face of a body that is meshed with 3D elements.Heat GenerationDefines the heat flux or heat load per unit volume (energy/(time x volume)). You can select any order of geometry to define the load. For information on how the solver treats different Thermal Load types applied to the selected geometry, see Thermal Loads.
Destination Folder
Load Container Specifies the folder in the Simulation Navigator in which the boundary condition will be stored. The list includes the root container and existing folders that you created using the New Folder command. Examples of a root container include Load Container, Constraint Container, and Simulation Object Container.
Folder Manager Displays a hierarchical listing of existing folders. To create a new folder, right-click any level of the hierarchy and choose New Folder.
Region
Group Reference Lets you apply the load region to a group. For more information, see Group Reference options.
Select Object Lets you select the elements, polygon bodies, curves, faces, or edges to which the load is be applied.Element Selection Filtering lets you limit your element selection to the FE entity you select from the Filter Type list:Elements lets you select any element type in a single selection.Element Edges lets you select 1D elements, the edges of 2D, or 3D elements.Element Faces lets you select 2D elements or the faces of 3D elements.Caution: You must select Element from the main selection Type Filter list to use the Element Selection Filtering options.Note: Options available on Filter Type list depend on the thermal load Type you select.Excluded lets you remove individual entities from within your selected object.
Stacked Smart Selector Methods Opens the Smart Selector Methods dialog box where you can specify a progression of smart selection filters. For more information, see Smart Selector Methods dialog box.
Region Override
Appears when Type is set to Heat Load.
Override Region Overrides the region with a non-geometric element.Non-Geometric ElementDefines a heat load on a non-geometric element. Select an existing non-geometric element modeling object from the list, or click Create Modeling Object to create a non-geometric element.
Magnitude
Heat Load/Heat Flux/Heat Generation Sets the Heat Load, Heat Flux, or Heat Generation value. If you enter a negative value, the direction of the thermal load is reversed. For more information, see Additional magnitude options.
Reference Temperature Set
Specify Reference Temperature Set Uses average temperature of the elements selected in the Reference Temperature Set modeling object to compute the temperature-varying thermal load magnitude at run time. For more information, see Define a variable heat load as a function of arbitrary element group temperature.
Reference Temperature Set Specifies a Reference Temperature Set modeling object which average temperature controls the temperature-varying thermal load magnitude.Select a modeling object from the list, or click Create Modeling Object to define a new modeling object.Click Modify Selected to modify the specified modeling object.
Heater Control
Control Heater Applies the load when thermal conditions match those specified by the selected Thermostat or Active Heater Controller type modeling object.
Heater Controller or Thermostat Appears when Control Heater is selected.Specifies either a Thermostat or an Active Heater Controller type modeling object. For more information, see Thermostat or Active Heater Controller.Select a modeling object from the list, or click Open Manager to define a new modeling object.Click Modify Selected to modify the specified modeling object.
Multi-Layer Shells
Specify Layer to Apply to Applies the load to a specific layer or layers when you are applying a Thermal Load to multi-layer shell elements.Note: Multi-layer shells are not allowed in a Flow solution type.
Apply to Appears when Specify Layer to Apply to is selected.Specifies to which layers the software applies the load.Note: The Top layer is the side of the element facing the same direction as the element normal. The Bottom layer is the opposite side, and is designated layer 1.Top, Middle, or BottomApplies the load to the top, middle, or bottom layers of the selected elements.AllApplies the load to all layers of the selected elements.SpecifyLets you specify an individual layer to which to apply the load.
Layer Number (Bottom=1) Appears when Apply to is set to Specify.Specifies the ID number of the layer to which to apply the load.
Distribution
Per Element Applies specified thermal load to each element. When this check box is cleared, the specified thermal load is distributed among the elements of the selection.
