LS-DYNA environment

Customizing LS-DYNA input files with user defined text

In some cases, you may want to insert either specific text or an entire text file into your solver input file. You can create a User Defined Text type of modeling object to add that text. For example, you can use User Defined Text to include solver commands or options that are not yet supported in the Pre/Post user interface in your solution.

In the LS-DYNA solver environment, you can use the User Defined Text modeling object to specify either text or an entire file to add either to a particular solution or within a particular step. If you choose to include a file, the software uses the LS-DYNA *INCLUDE keyword to insert the file either:

  • At the beginning of the input file, after the *KEYWORD keyword.

  • At the end of the input file, before the *END keyword.

For example, you can use the User Defined Text modeling object to insert an external file that contains a portion of your LS-DYNA input file. The file can contain, for example, model definition data, comment lines, or other references to external files. You can also use a User Defined Text modeling object to add LS-DYNA keywords to your input file that are not currently supported in this user interface.

Modifications to text in inserted files

When you export or solve an LS-DYNA solution that contains a User Defined Text modeling object, the software ensures that the resulting LS-DYNA input file contains only a single instance each of the *KEYWORD and *END keywords. If a file contains multiple instances of the *KEYWORD or *END keywords, then LS-DYNA rejects the input file.

When you use a User Defined Text modeling object to insert an external file into the input file, Pre/Post makes the following modifications:

  • If any lines in the User Defined Text object begin with either *KEYWORD or *END, the software adds four comment characters at the beginning of the line ($$$$).

  • For User Defined Text modeling objects that use the Merged option in the Text From File list, the software adds a comment that indicates the name and full path of the file that contains the text.
