Example of creating SMT diagrams

In the following example of a plate assembly model, you want to display shear, moment, and torque (SMT) diagrams of the applied forces along a path around a hole. The example uses the results of a Simcenter Nastran SOL 101 analysis.

The example uses the two-step process to create the SMT diagrams:

  • Set up the nodal force reports on path.

  • Set up and generate the SMT diagrams.

Step 1: Set up the nodal force reports on path.

In this example, Solution 1 is a Simcenter Nastran SOL 101 analysis. The solution is solved and the results are loaded.

  1. In the Simulation Navigator, right-click Solution 1 and choose Nodal Force Reports on Path.

  2. In the Nodal Force Reports on Path dialog box, from the Force Type list, select Applied.

  3. Select the nodes from which to generate the nodal force reports on path: In the Nodes group, clear the All Nodes check box. On the Top Border bar, from the Type Filter list, select Node. Click Select Object and select the nodes around the hole. The software selects the nodes and displays the number selected in the Nodal Force Reports on Path dialog box, in this case 198.

  4. Create the path.In the Path group, click New Query Curve . In the Name box, type Force_QC. Select the seven query curve nodes in the order shown. The node selection may vary.Click OK.

  5. In the Nodal Force Reports on Path dialog box, in the Z Tolerance box, type 5 mm and click OK. The software creates seven nodal force reports on path. It displays them in the Nodal Force Reports node of the Simulation Navigator under the solution. It uses the names NFR_Force_QC_Applied_1 through NFR_Force_QC_Applied_7 based on the prefix NFR, the name of the query curve, the type of force (applied), and the vertex count.

  6. Select a nodal force reports on path. The nodes are highlighted in the +Z-direction of the vector of the path points. The following graphic shows the nodes selected for the first nodal force reports on path, NFR_Force_QC_Applied_1.

Step 2: Set up and generate the SMT diagrams.

  1. In the Simulation Navigator, expand the Nodal Force Reports node.

  2. Hold the Ctrl key and select all the nodal force reports on path.

  3. Right-click the selection and choose Shear Moment Torque Diagrams.

  4. In the Shear Moment Torque Diagrams dialog box, in the Output Options group:If the Graph Name Prefix box contains any text, delete it. Select all the shear force, axial force, bending moment, or torque check boxes.

  5. Click OK.The software creates SMT diagrams for each output force you selected. It stores them in the Graphs node of the Post Processing Navigator.

  6. In the Post Processing Navigator, right-click Bending Moment X and choose Plot. Click the main graphics window to display the plot.
