Contact and glue conditions > Abaqus contact and glue

Contact and glue overview (Abaqus)

In the Abaqus environment, when you include contact or glue conditions in your solution, you can use a number of different commands, as well as several different types of modeling objects to define options that control those conditions. After you create a modeling object, you can reference that modeling object from any applicable solution or solution step.

Contacts

Contact Abaqus keyword Description Additional information
Bolt Contact with Clearance *CLEARANCE with the BOLT parameter Lets you define precise clearance or overclosure (initial penetration) values when you model contact between a single-threaded bolt and a bolt hole. Bolt Contact with Clearance (Abaqus)
Contact with Clearance *CLEARANCE Lets you define precise clearance or overclosure (initial penetration) values for the nodes on the slave (target) surface in a contact pair. Contact with Clearance (Abaqus)
Edge to Edge Contact *SURFACE Lets you create a contact between selected polygon or element edges. Edge to Edge Contact (Abaqus)
General Contact *CONTACT and *CONTACT_INCLUSIONS, ALL EXTERIOR Lets you create a contact for all allowable element faces and model entities in the model. General Contact (Abaqus)
Pressure Penetration *PRESSURE PENETRATION Lets you create pressure penetration loads with surface-based contact. Pressure Penetration (Abaqus)
Rigid Body *RIGID BODY Lets you model very stiff components. Rigid body (Abaqus)
Surface Based Coupling *COUPLING and either the *KINEMATIC or *DISTRIBUTED keyword Lets you create a coupling between a reference node and a group of nodes called the coupling nodes. Surface Based Coupling (Abaqus)
Surface-to-Surface Contact *CONTACT PAIR,*SURFACE Lets you create a contact between selected surfaces. Surface-to-Surface Contact (Simcenter Nastran, Simcenter 3D Multiphysics, Abaqus, ANSYS)
Surface-to-Surface Thermal Conductance *GAP CONDUCTANCE In Thermal-Heat Transfer analyses, lets you model conductive heat transfer between proximate or contacting surfaces. Surface-to-Surface Thermal Conductance (Abaqus)
Tie Surface *TIE Lets you tie two separate surfaces together so that there is no relative motion between them. Tie Surface (Abaqus)

Contact property objects

Contact property object Abaqus keyword Description Additional information
Abaqus Change Friction Definition *FRICTION Lets you change the friction properties of contact pair interactions as well as the contact friction definition for each solution step. Modifying friction properties between steps (Abaqus)
Abaqus Contact Step Control Parameters *CONTACT CONTROLS Lets you define additional solution controls for models that include contact between bodies. These additional controls allow you to control automatic stabilization of rigid body motions in contact problems that use viscous damping. Controlling contact steps (Abaqus)
Contact Exclusion *CONTACT, *CONTACT EXCLUSIONS, and *SURFACE Lets you define the pairs of surfaces or self-contacting surface that should not contact or interact during the analysis of a General Contact. Excluding surfaces from general contacts (Abaqus)
Contact Inclusion *CONTACT, *CONTACT INCLUSIONS, and *SURFACE Lets you specify the regions of the model that should be considered for contact during the analysis of a General Contact. Including surfaces in general contacts (Abaqus)
Contact Interference CONTACT PAIR andCONTACT INTERFERENCE Lets you define time-dependent allowable interferences for contact pairs and elements. Contact interference (Abaqus)
Contact Pair *CONTACT PAIR, *SURFACE INTERACTION, *SURFACE BEHAVIOR, and *FRICTION Lets you define properties for the pairs of surfaces that may contact or interact during the analysis. These properties include the friction and surface interaction properties.Available for Structural analyses. Defining contact pairs (Abaqus Structural and Thermal analyses)
Contact Property *CONTACT PROPERTY ASSIGNMENT, *SURFACE INTERACTION, *SURFACE BEHAVIOR, *FRICTION, and *CONTACT FORMULATION Lets you define non-standard properties to specified regions of the contact.Available for Dynamic Explicit analyses. Defining contact properties (Abaqus Dynamic Explicit analyses)
Cohesive Behavior *COHESIVE BEHAVIOR Lets you model cohesive behavior for the contacting surfaces. Modeling cohesive behavior in Abaqus contact analyses
Damage Initiation, Damage Evolution, and Damage Stabilization *DAMAGE INITIATION, *DAMAGE EVOLUTION, and *DAMAGE STABILIZATION Lets you simulate the degradation and eventual failure of the bond between two cohesive surfaces Defining damage modeling for Abaqus cohesive behavior
Friction *FRICTION Lets you introduce friction properties into a mechanical surface interaction model governing the interaction of contact surfaces. You create a Friction modeling object through the Surface Interaction modeling object. Defining contact properties for general contacts (Abaqus)
General Contact Property *CONTACT PROPERTY ASSIGNMENT, *SURFACE INTERACTION, *SURFACE BEHAVIOR, *FRICTION, and *CONTACT FORMULATION Lets you define non-standard properties to specified regions of the contact. Defining contact properties for general contacts (Abaqus)
Surface Behavior *SURFACE BEHAVIOR Lets you modify the default hard contact pressure-overclosure relationship in a contact. You create a Surface Behavior modeling object through the Surface Interaction modeling object. Defining contact properties for general contacts (Abaqus)
Surface Interaction *SURFACE INTERACTION Lets you control contact interactions. You create a Surface Interaction modeling object through the Contact Property modeling object. Defining contact properties for general contacts (Abaqus)
