Getting started > Importing simulation entities
Correspondence checks and reattachment
When you import simulation entities, the software performs a correspondence check between the source and target simulations. The source and target simulations are generally considered to correspond when:
The source simulation references the same FEM or assembly FEM selected in the target simulation.
The source simulation references an assembly FEM that instances the selected FEM in the target simulation.
If the source and target pass the correspondence check, the software attempts to automatically reattach imported loads, constraints, simulation objects, and DOF sets to the corresponding geometry or FE entities in the target simulation.
If the correspondence check fails, all specified entities in the source simulation are imported, but are not attached to any geometry or FE entities. (For more information about unattached boundary conditions, see Boundary condition status in Simulation Navigator.) You can then edit the imported boundary conditions to attach them to the desired geometry, nodes, or elements.
Fields
When importing fields, the software checks the target simulation for boundary conditions referencing a field with the same name. If the field names match, the software attaches the imported field to the corresponding boundary condition in the target simulation.
When importing spatial fields used to define loads and constraints, the software also performs a full correspondence check and reattaches the spatial field definition to the corresponding geometry or FE entities in the target simulation.
If the correspondence check fails, the field is still imported and made available to the target simulation. You can then create or edit boundary conditions that reference the imported field.
Groups
If the correspondence check passes, the software maps grouped objects in the source simulation to the corresponding objects in the target simulation. If the correspondence check fails, the software imports empty groups.
Regions
If the correspondence check passes, the software maps region target sets in the source simulation to the corresponding target sets in the target simulation. If the correspondence check fails, the software imports empty regions.
Material and physical property tables, modeling objects, and solutions
Material and physical property tables, modeling objects, and solutions are imported regardless of whether the correspondence check passes.
You only need to import any of these entities once for them to be available to all objects in the simulation. You do not need to import them for each corresponding component FEM instance in the target simulation.
Importing simulation entities based on an unrelated FEM
You can also import simulation entities when there is no correspondence between the source and target simulations. Loads, constraints, and simulation objects are imported, but are not attached to any geometry or FE entities. Fields are imported, but are not mapped to any referencing boundary condition. Groups and regions are imported as empty entities.
Importing result probes
When you import a result probe, its state is active or asleep (inactive), depending on whether the entities of the result probe can be mapped to the target simulation. The sleep state appears in the Simulation Navigator and in the Information dialog box. For example, the following shows the sleep state of an imported result probe.
When the result probe is asleep, you can edit, rename, delete, or display information about the result probe so you can restore it to an active state. A result probe is active when entities associated with the result probe are in the simulation.
Note:
If a result probe references a result probe in another solution, the software displays an error message and does not import the result probe.
