Transverse gradient mapping

Thermal models often use parallel 2D meshes or a multi-layer shell mesh to simulate layered constructions. In a structural model, this layered construction is often reduced to a single mesh that contains temperature gradient data.

For thermal mapping only, use a Transverse Gradient Zone type of Mapping constraint and a Transverse Gradient Target Zone constraint to map a temperature differential that exists between two parallel or quasi-parallel 2D meshes or multi-layer shell meshes in the source thermal model, to a single mesh in the target model.

  • The Transverse Gradient Zone type of Mapping constraint in the source model defines the two 2D meshes or the multi-layer shell meshes that contain the thermal data.

  • The Transverse Gradient Target Zone constraint in the target model defines the single mesh on which the software generates the thermal gradient data.

Temperature gradient mapping from two parallel 2D meshes (1) to one 2D mesh (2) Temperature gradient mapping from one 2D multi-layer shell mesh (3) to one 2D mesh (4)

When you map results from two-parallel 2D meshes (1) to one 2D target mesh (2), the source temperature gradient is defined by the difference between the top layer temperature and the bottom layer temperature, divided by the thickness. The gradient is mapped to the corresponding nodes of the target model.

When multi-layer shells in the source model have transverse gradient results, the results are mapped directly from the multi-layer shell mesh (3) in the source model to 2D mesh (4) in the target model.

Tip:

You must select the Transverse Temperature Gradients results set in the source model to get the Transverse Temperature Gradients – Elemental and Transverse Temperature Gradients – Nodal results after the analysis is complete.
