Specifying cross sections for 1D elements (Simcenter 3D Thermal/Flow, Electronic Systems Cooling, and Space Systems Thermal)

When you work with Simcenter 3D Thermal/Flow, Simcenter 3D Electronic Systems Cooling, or Simcenter 3D Space Systems Thermal, you can use 1D elements for the following:

  • Thermal modeling of beams using a Beam type of 1D mesh collectors. You can also model thermal effects on beams in the axisymmetric part of the model using a Lumped Mass Axisymmetric type of 0D mesh collector.

  • Thermal modeling of shells in the axisymmetric part of the model, using a Beam Axisymmetric type of 1D mesh collector.

  • Flow modeling of ducts using Duct, Duct with Mass Flow, Duct Axisymmetric, and Duct with Mass Flow Axisymmetric types of 1D mesh collectors.

  • Thermal and flow modeling of ducts and duct wall heat transfer, using a Duct with Thick Wall type of 1D mesh collector.

Using the Section Manager

You must assign cross sections to 1D elements using the Section Manager and the Beam Section dialog box. The Section Manager and the dialog box are accessible from the 1D Mesh Collector dialog box for the following types:

  • Beam

  • Duct

  • Duct with Thick Wall

You do not use the Section Manager to define a cross section for the following types of 1D mesh collectors:

  • Beam Axisymmetric. For this type of mesh collector, you define a thickness using the Thin Shell physical property.

  • Duct Axisymmetric. For this type of mesh collector, you define a thickness using the Duct physical property.

  • Duct with Mass Flow, and Duct with Mass Flow Axisymmetric. These types of mesh collectors do not need any cross section characterization as the cross sectional area is not used by the thermal solver.

For 0D lumped mass axisymmetric elements, you define the solid area, Awall, and external perimeter, Pwall, in the Section group of the Mesh Collector dialog box.

Creating the cross sections

Model the cross section area of beams and ducts using the predefined beam types available in the Beam Section dialog box, or create a User Defined Properties type.

Although you can define a cross section with virtually any shape, the thermal solver reduces the cross section to the following values:

BeamsThe area of the cross section, AwallThe perimeter of the cross section, Pwall DuctsThe area of the cross section, AductThe perimeter of the cross section, Pduct Ducts with thick wallsThe internal area of the cross section, AductThe internal perimeter of the cross section, PductThe area of the duct wall, AwallThe external perimeter of the cross section, Pwall

Note:

When you use Face of Solid and General Geometry types, only the section area is exported as the solid area property, Awall. External perimeter, Pwall, fluid area, Aduct, and wetted perimeter, Pduct, are zero. Therefore, do not use Face of Solid and General Geometry types.
