Results for combined load cases

You can create combined load cases from SOL 101 Linear Statics - Global Constraints subcases. Understanding how the subcases are combined and how the scale factor is applied can help you to better plan for creating the load cases you want to view in post processing or add to load case sets in Margin of Safety or Load Case Filtering solutions.

Because the SOL 101 Linear Statics - Global Constraints solution is linear static and the constraints are the same for each subcase, the principal of superposition applies. Thus, when you create a combined load case, the software sums the scaled results of the underlying subcases on a component-by-component basis.

For example, suppose that you create a combined load case from two subcases. For the first subcase, you do not apply a scale factor. For the second subcase, you use a scale factor of 2.50. The following table shows some hypothetical displacement and stress results and the combined results.

Component Subcase 1 scale factor Subcase 1 results Subcase 2 scale factor Subcase 2 results Combined load case results
u 1.00 0.90 2.50 -0.30 0.15
v 0.30 0.00 0.30
w -0.40 0.40 0.60
σx 75.00 24.00 135.00
σy -32.00 8.00 -12.00
σz 0.00 14.00 35.00
τxy -45.00 -10.00 -70.00
τyz 0.00 0.00 0.00
τzx 0.00 12.00 30.00

Because derived quantities such as von Mises stress, principal stresses, magnitude of displacement, and so on are not linear combinations of the underlying components, the software calculates them from the component results of the combined load case.
